Danny Caliolio Jersey City, New Jersey Filipino Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
|
When our Jersey City connections were asked who to
recommend to represent New Jersey for the TWENTY
OUTSTANDING FILIPINO-AMERICANS project of FIL-AM IMAGE,
without hesitation, they named Danny Caliolio in the top of their
list.
“Why not get someone here in Jersey City who received more
honors for his achievements than anyone else,” suggested an old-
timer who is active with the New York-New Jersey Filipino
Community. “After all, the first batch of the TWENTY should be the
cream of the crop and you’ll definitely be a-okay with Danny
Caliolio.”
Danny's corporation, the Happy Valley Fragrances International,
Inc. specializes in both domestic and imported men and women’s
fragrances. It does wholesale and retail as well as export and
import all kinds of perfumes and colognes.
“Most of the boutique shops in the country - from the West, Midwest
and East Coasts - get their supply of perfume from us,” explained
one of Danny’s employees. “We ship numerous orders from all
over the United States and receive a lot of products from overseas

on a daily basis.”
Danny and his wife, Fe, are the owners and officers of the multi-million dollars enterprise. Danny is the Board
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer while his wife, the former Fe Cabigting Martinez is the Vice
President and Secretary-Treasurer.
"I started this venture in 1979 when I was deprived of a long-awaited promotion in a department store chain
where I was a department supervisor for more than ten years,” related Danny. Danny graduated from Far
Eastern University in Manila with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce majoring in Accounting in
1967. “I made up my mind then to be on my own and established the Happy Valley Fragrance International,
Inc.”
When Danny started his firm, his original plan was not to concentrate on specializing on fragrances. “My
intention was to diversify in all kinds of businesses. However, year after year, I found out that by specializing
in one line of business, I have a better chance to be more successful,” he explained.
Danny’s executive office is covered wall to wall by plaques, certificates and resolutions extolling him for his
community and business leadership.
Danny Caliolio was born and raised in Concepcion, Tarlac. He is one of the seven children whose parents
maintain residences in the Philippines and Jersey City. Both parents are retired educators from the province
of Tarlac. His father, Teofilo Magbag Calilio of Tarlac, was a principal of San Francisco Elementary School in
Tarlac, Tarlac while his mother, the former Leonila B. Castro, was also a principal at Santa Rita Elementary
School in Concepcion. Danny's two sisters, Flordiliza, a Commerce graduate and Olivia, a teacher, are both
in the New Jersey area. Two brothers are medical doctors, Teofilo, Jr. and Galileo. The youngest, Michael,
is an accountant in the Philippines.
A black belt in the martial arts and an avid sportsman, Danny sponsors baseball, bowling and karate teams
and tournaments. His basketball team has been consistently undefeated champion for several tournaments
because according to Danny, “I strongly believe in winning and competing fiercely. It’s healthy for the
community to see a strong team and for them to aim to beat that winning group.”
Although Danny’s Filipino business dealings are very limited since his firm, which handles close to a million
dollars monthly sales, caters mostly to non-Filipinos, Danny still actively participates in all tournaments
“to add excitement to the Community.”
“Whenever there’s a Filipino affair — social, political or what-have-you— Danny is approached for contribution
or donation. He never turns away anyone asking for help,” related a president of one of the close to two
hundred Filipino organizations in the Tri-State.
Danny is active in several organizations, aside from trade associations. He is the current president of
Carinosa, U.S.A: Director of The Jersey City Filipino Lions; Director of Tarlaqueno, U.S.A. and president of the
Philippine Basketball Association of New Jersey. His wife, Fe, is a registered nurse. She is currently
studying to be a Gemologist, a study of precious stones and gems.
The Caliolios reside in fashionable Passaic in New Jersey. They have two children: Christopher, 16 and
Laurene, 5.
