Monterey Park, but statewide and nationwide as well. He has the

mayor in Southern California. Although currently not holding any

for higher office in the near future. Monty seeks out to encourage
and support qualified Filipino-Americans to run for elective office.
Monty Manibog’s political record is unmatched among Filipino-
American politicians. He won the elective office of councilman as
a top vote getter in the City of Monterey Park for three times and
had served a total of twelve years (1976-88) in the city council. He
served for three terms as Mayor of the City and also three times as

department facilities, Brightwood School cafetorium, gymnasium
and community center, expansion of libraries and the building of a
modern Senior Citizens Center.

“When Filipinos talk about political aspirations or politics where a Filipino-American may be involved, the
name of Monty Manibog comes in the conversation as a role model and inspiration,” commented Melecio H.
Jacaban, grand old man of the Filipino communities in America. “Monty is a pride of our people.”
Born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines and raised in Hawaii, Monty served for a few years in the U.S. Army in
Japan prior to settling in Monterey Park twenty nine years ago. Following his graduation from Hilo High School
in Hawaii, he went to the Philippines to acquire a Bachelor of Arts degree and his Pre-Law from the University
of the Philippines. After completing his basic educations, he relocated to Southern California where he
received his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University School of Laws in Los Angeles.
Monty was admitted to the California Bar, as well as to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. He
has been practicing law since 1961 - making him one of the first Filipino lawyers in Southern California.
Monty maintains law offices in Monterey Park, San Diego and Los Angeles, where he recently held a grand
opening of his law offices with more than 400 invited guests headed by California governatorial candidate,
former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein.
Monty is a sports fanatic not as a fan but as participant. In his days at the University of the Philippines, he was
a champion wrestler and a Philippine national gold medalist in both gymnastics and wrestling. In 1952, Monty
competed in the World Olympics in Helsinki, Finland representing the Philippines in wrestling. In the 1984
Olympics, he served as U.S. Olympic envoy for the L.A. Olympics Committee to the countries of Malaysia,
Indonesia, the Philippines and Bhutan. He was a wrestling coach for the Philippine team in Seoul, Korea in
the 1988 World Olympics.
Monty’s father was the late Atty. Gonzalo Manibog, a school teacher in the Philippines and a professor at
University of Kansas. He was also one of the first Filipinos admitted to practice law in Hawaii, the States of
Illinois and Indiana. His mother was the late Adela Montilla, also school teacher.
“My busy and growing law practice and the development of the Phil-Am Professional Center are the two main
factors why I have not sought an elected office,” commented Monty. He heads the newly completed
professional and busines building complex housing Filipino-American firms including his own law
practices.
Politically active for almost three decades, Monty has the necessary name recognition in Monterey Park,
Alhambra, South El Monte, Montebello and Pico Rivera - the major areas encompassing the 59th Assembly
District and the 30th Congressional District.
“At this time, I would rather help my friends and encourage Filipino-Americans to seek elective position. We
are rapidly increasing in number and it is time for us to actively participate as candidate in the political arena
of mainstream America,” remarked Monty.
Monty’s lovely wife, the former Jean Gingerich is from Cincinnati, Ohio and his six children: Monty, Jr., Lisa,
Ricky, Lana, Dean and Darren as well as Monty’s brother, sisters, nieces and nephews are closely knit
