When it comes to Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery, one of the
well- known physicians in the entire United States as well as other
parts of the world is an unassuming, shy and gentle Filipino
doctor - Dr. Jorge M. Garcia, formerly of Binan, Laguna,
Philippines. The 49-year old specialist is the Chief of Cardiac
Division of Washington Hospital Center, the world famous Heart
Center for people of all ages with heart ailments located in
Washington, D.C.
“As far as I know, there is no one that can claim to have done more
coronary artery bypass grafts than Dr. Garcia,” claimed one of the
Filipino heart specialists currently practicing in California.
“Whenever I run across a patient who is suffering from heart
ailments and needs a bypass, I immediately recommend Dr.
Garcia’s services.”
Dr. Garcia has been lecturing on the subject for more than 16
years. He lectured on the” Surgical Treatment of Severe Triple
Coronary Vessel Diseases” at an annual meeting of the Asian
Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon in Sapporo,
Japan in 1974. The following year, he spoke on the subject of
“The First 100 Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts at the Washington

Hospital Center” at Surgical Grand Rounds at Washington, D.C.
Dr. Garcia’s patients are from all over the world. Luminaries in the Philippines come to the Nation’s Capital
to seek the help of the renowned specialist. And it has been known among Filipinos, both here in America
and in the Philippines, that the Filipino specialist waives the enormous cost of the surgery to help his
compatriots.
At his own expense, at least once a year, Dr. Jorge Garcia takes a surgery team to Manila to perform free
bypass surgeries to Filipinos suffering from the deadly disease. In 1980, he was awarded the recognition of
"Physician of the Year "by the Philippine government for his unselfish services to his compatriots,
About five years ago, one of the high ranking government officials of Metro Manila solicited the assistance of
Dr. Garcia because of acute coronary problems. The official came prepared to pay for Dr. Garcia’s services,
however, after the surgery, Dr. Garcia informed his patient to take back his money and donate it to the
Philippine Heart Center in Manila.
“His patients are not the only beneficiaries of his generosity,” related one Filipino golfer in Washington, D.C.
who belongs to the same Pinoy Golf Association where Dr. Jorge “Boy” Garcia is the president.”During our
Christmas Holidays party, Dr. Garcia will see to it that the club members are treated to a sumptuous dinner
and picks up the tab whenever the collections are not sufficient to meet the cost of the affair.”
Among his peers, Dr. Garcia is highly respected and look up on as the man who has immensely
contributed to the growth of the Washington Hospital Center as the heart center of America. “Dr. Garcia made
the hospital famous because of his extra ordinary skill in the surgery table. The hospital is handling more than
3,000 bypass surgeries a year!” exclaimed another cardiologist from a neighboring hospital in Virginia. “There’
s no way that anyone can compare the number of patients going to Washington Hospital Center with other
hospitals for bypass surgery.”
Added another doctor, “The man behind the success of all of this is a Filipino. Someone that truly highlights
positive image for your people.”
Dr. Jorge M. Garcia completed his Preparatory (’59) and Proper Medicine in 1964 from the oldest university in
the Far East, the University of Santo Tomas. He finished his Residency at the University of Santo Tomas
Hospital and in 1967, he came to Washington Hospital Center as an Intern in Surgery. In 1968, he became
Resident-General Surgery and in 1971, he was promoted as Chief Surgical Resident Administrative. Then in
1972, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio and joined the Cleveland Clinic Hospital to complete his Fellowship in
Thoracic and Cardiovascular as well as his Chief Administrative Fellow. Completing all the advance
requirements in his medical field, in 1974 he returned to the Nation’s Capital and rejoined Washington
Hospital Center to assume his current position as Senior Attending Physician. Four years later, in addition,
he was designated as the Center’s Chief of Cardiac Division- - both major positions he concurrently holds.
Dr. Garcia also serves as Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at nearby George Washington University
