Paul V. Salazar Riverforest, Illinois Industrialist Inventor Pride of Iloilo
|
Determined and eager to succeed in this land of opportunity, Paul
Ventura Salazar migrated to the United States in the winter of
1959 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the age of 24 years old.
One of the seven children of the late Dimas Salazar and the late
Consolacion Ventura, both from San Miguel, Iloilo, Philippines,
Pabling wanted to be a priest. However, after finishing his high
school education from San Vicente Ferrer Seminary School in
Jaro, Iloilo City, he decided to go to Manila and attended Adamson
University-MLQ University. In 1956, he graduated with a degree of
Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Then he proceeded
to America to complete his Post Graduate studies at Marquet
University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then transferred to De
Paul University and Illinois Institute of Technology, both in Chicago,
Illinois.
In Chicago, he started as a research engineer and in less than six
months, promoted to be Special Assistant to the Vice President
for Research and Manufacturing for Plibiro Co. Later, he joined
Zenith Radio Corporation as ceramic engineer where he
discovered the defect of the glass manufactured for colored
television’s picture tube set. In 1967, Nalco Chemical Company

hired Pabling as a Research Engineer where in less than three months, he invented a new refractory product
for steel industry applications which was immediately patented by Nalco as their own product. Other
inventions were made by Pabling for Nalco but were not patented.
Two years later, he transferred to the world renowned Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute where
in less than four months, he invented the artificial human bone.
“It was then time for my major move,” related Pabling. “I decided to put up my own basic industry specializing
in high-temperature refractory products.”
The rest is history for the Filipino inventor! So far, his latest inventions have outperformed the products of
multi-million dollars and multi-national companies. His own firm, Salazar & Sons, Inc., Researchers and
Manufacturers of Refractory Specialty Products with home offices in River Forest, Illinois and subsidiaries in
Welland, Ontario, Canada; Birmingham, Alabama and Quezon City, Philippines, have over one hundred
outstanding products. They are sold to foundry and steel industries such as General Motors, Armco Steel,
Bethlehem Steel, Ford Motors, Atlantic Steel, John Deere Foundry, Caterpillar, Keystone Steel and other major
companies in America. His present plant maximum production capacity is 70 tons per seven-and-a-half hours
a day and currently shipping 900 tons a month!
Through Pabling’s successes, he raises the esteem for Filipino scientist and industrialists among the
mainstream America. Pabling has attributed his successes mainly to his wife, the former Celine E. Erestain
of Gubat, Sorsogon.
“She has been very supportive and inspiring in all my endeavors. No one had supported or aided me except
my wife, Celine,” remarked Pabling. In 1975-76, he was listed in Marquis Who’s Who in Finance and
Industries and in that same year, the Philippine Government named him as Outstanding Filipino Overseas in
the field of business. Last year, he was nominated for Marquis Who’s Who of the Executives in 1989.
“Mr. Salazar is one of the most outstanding Filipinos in the consular jurisdictions of the Chicago’s Philippine
Consulate General,” remarked former Philippine Consul General Mario C. Belisario. “He is a real
entrepreneur in the Philippine community.”
As President, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Salazar & Sons, Pabling is affiliated with several
organizations in the ceramic industry. Among them, he is an active member of: American Management
Association, American Ceramic Society, British Ceramic Society, National Institute of Ceramic Engineers,
American Foundrymen’s Society, The Metallurgical Society of American Institute of Metallurgical Engineer
(AIME), The President’s Association of the American Management Association, American Concrete Institute,
British National Institute of Refractory Engineers, American Society of Testing and Materials, Chicago
Association of Commerce and Industry and Knights of Columbus.
“Surprisingly enough, in spite of his busy schedule, Pabling still finds time to enjoy his hobbies which are
photography, fishing, camping, bowling and reading,” commented a close friend from Chicago.
The Salazars have two grown children, Joseph B. Salazar, 27 and John P. Salazar, 22. Pabling and his wife,
Celine, reside in fashionable suburban River Forest.
