|
Dr. Jose Evangelista, the untiring physician and civic leader,
revealed his scholarship abilities early in life. He graduated
valedictorian from Candaba Elementary School in 1956. Later in
1960, he graduated valedictorian again from St. Andrews Academy
in Candaba, Pampanga.
In 1963 he enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and
completed his Pre-Medicine Bachelor's degree and in Zoology
Summa Cum Laude in 1962. Later in 1968, he received his
Doctor of Medicine degree, serving as president of the graduating
class.
Dr. Evangelista has a diplomate in Internal Medicine and
Cardiology. He has been Board certified in Internal Medicine with
the sub-specialty in Cardiovascular Diseases both in U.S. and
Canada.
He has been honored as fellows of various organizations such as:
American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians,
American College of Chest Physicians, American College of
Angiology, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
and American College of Internal Physicians and many others.

A man of action and a dynamic leader, Dr. Evangelista has been actively involved in various civic organizations
in the community, nationwide and in the Philippines. To mention a few: he was past president of Philippine
Medical Association of Michigan for two terms in 1981to 1983. Served as president of Association of
Philippine Physicians in America in 1987, one of the most powerful Filipino organizations in U.S.. He served
as the chairman of the Rizal Day Committee which involved thirty- two Filipino organizations. Last year, he
was elected president of U.S.T. Medical Alumni Association of America for 1992-1994 term. In the past years,
he served as Convention Chairman of U.S.T. Medical Alumni of Midwest; Overall Co-chairperson of
Asian-American Journalists' Association during their Fundraising Scholarship Gala in 1989. In 1985, he
served as president of Pampangueno of Michigan, and in appreciation to his unselfish services rendered to
the organization, he was awarded the Archbishop Medallion Award for Outstanding Professional and
Philantropic contributions to Pampanga, Philippines.
In recognition to Dr. Evangelista's leadership and unselfish services to the the community, he has been a
recipient of numerous awards namely; National President's award from Michigan State Medical Society; UST
Medical Alumni of Michigan And President award; Physicans Recognition Award by the American Medical
Association; Innovative and Outstanding Leadership Award from Rizal Day Committee, Certificate of Award
from Livonia Public Schools, Training Sponsor for the Youth of the Community; Outstanding Pampangueno
Award for Humanitarian Services and Medicine given by the Governor of Pampanga, Philippines.
Dr. Evangelista excels in both medical field and in business. Together with his lovely and talented wife, Dr.
Stella Salgado Evange-lista, they have done quite well in investing in real estate and now own many
commercial and residential complexes in several parts of the United States, Joe serves as the CEO of their
corporation, Royal Management Company.
Joe attributes his success and bountiful "blessings" to his "teammate", his lovely wife, Stella. Last year, the
couple were inducted in to the Metropolitan Detroit's International Heritage Hall of Fame. They became the
first Filipino and the first couple to be recipients of the Hall of Fame Awards. Each year, they plan an annual
three-week trip to the Philippines with a group of 12 to 25 doctors to provide medical services to needy people
who require surgery. The couple visits the country two or three times each year, sometimes purely for medical
pursuits and other times to visit families.
Advancing medical education in the Philippines is another pet project for the Evangelistas who work on
scholarships for students to attend medical school in the Philippines or medical faculty to study for a year or
two in the United States. Joe's main goal is for foreign medical students to be treated equally with those from
the United States explaining that medical schools now are limiting the enrollment of their foreign students to
five percent of the population. According to Joe, in some training hospitals they would rather have positions
vacant than fill them with a foreign student and this is what he is fighting to change. The couple also is
working to make the Asian community much more active in politics, both for involvement and to become more
visible.
The Evangelistas have six children, the oldest is a business major, the second oldest is hoping to follow his
parents' footsteps, already in a pre-med program at college, while the third is now a freshman in college. The
remaining three children are in elementary school.
It is always a great pleasure to acknowledge and honor outstanding individuals like the Evangelistas who are
great assets to the Filipino communities in the United States. They exemplify positive image to mainstream
America.#
