Dr. Alex P. Yadao Alexandria, Virginia A Courageous Leader Crusading for International Medical Graduates
|
Dr. Alex P. Yadao is a prominent physician residing in Metro D.C.
Living comfortably-well at one the most exclusive and picturesque
area of Alexandria with a beautiful house next door to George and
Martha Washington's historic mansion, the good doctor should
have been relaxed and non-caring with controversial issues;
instead, he has been pursuing a noble and special crusade.
For almost twenty years, Dr. Yadao has been spearheading a
movement to fight for equal opportunity and justice for foreign
medical graduates (FMG) -- known now as international medical
graduates (IMG).
"The problem is right in our face. In the halls of the U.S. Congress,
there are currently new legislations that if and when they are
overlooked and casually passed by the law makers in Capitol Hill,
all the toil, sacrifices and humiliations the non-U.S. medical
graduates will all go down the drain. Innocently worded
legislations detrimental to our medical practices can be taken for
granted, but once they become law, they will require an act or acts
of the U.S. Congress to untangle them," explained Dr. Yadao.
"Thus, I am more active now than ever as one of the watchdogs
for our profession. I make sure that dollars contributed to
politicians are given to the ones who are symphatetic to the

causes of IMG."
To truly know the pulse of the medical profession, Dr. Yadao is active with medical societies across the
country. He is a member of American Medical Association, the World Medical Association, Medical Society of
Virginia, Fairfax County Medical Society, Prince William County Medical Society, International Association of
American Physicians, International College of Surgeons, American College of International Physicians,
American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Society of Philippine Surgeons, Association of Philippine
Physicians in America, Philippine Medical Association, Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Area and the Virginia
Association of Philippine Physicians.
When asked how he can keep up with the meetings and activities of these associations, Dr. Yadao
explained that his office is fully computerized. "He sure takes care of all of us Filipino doctors. We know when
something in Washington, D.C. is being planned that could adversely affect our practice," quipped a Filipino
practicing physician in Virginia. "One of the main problems is lack of voluntary contribution to fund the
activities of the like of Dr. Yadao. When it comes to financial assistance, our Filipino colleagues are slow in
extending their help."
Dr. Yadao is likewise active with civic associations, he is affiliated with the Optimist International Club, the
Boy Scouts of America, GWSAE Toastmaster International, Interim Board of Trustees of Eastern American
Bank, founding member and Chairman of the Board of the Ilocano Society of America, Asian Pacific Heritage
Council, Co-Founder of the Filipino American Citizens League, Past President of the Philippine Heritage
Federation, Founding President of Barangay International, National Executive Board Member of the Congress
of Filipino American Citizens, Charter Founding member of the Philippine Heritage Endowment Fund, and
Chairperson of the Filipino American Citizen League.
"Alex's involvement with the Filipino communities across the nation and his drive to highlight positive
Filipino-American image are remarkably outstanding," explained Jun Pedery, a nationally recognized
community leader and one of the FIL-AM IMAGE's 1991 Twenty Outstanding Filipino-Americans in the
United States awardees. " Alex is an asset to the Fil-Am community."
A die-hard "Tomasian," he completed his high school from the great University of Santo Tomas in Manila
and completed both his Pre-Medicine and his degree in Doctor of Medicine - "Meritus" from the same
historically well-known institution. When he first came to the United States in 1964 , he started his
Internship at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Since then, he has maintained his training and practice
in the Virginia, DC and Maryland vicinity.
Dr. Alex P. Yadao was born in Naguilan, La Union. Married to Nilda, also a physician, the Yadaos are
blessed with four children: Albert, Glynn, Melissa and Cherie.
FIL-AM IMAGE is honored to name Dr. Alex P. Yadao as one of the 1992 Twenty Outstanding
Filipino-Americans in the United States.
