Dr. E. Gary Villanueva is an internist, medical research scientist,
author-editor, poet-lyric composer, playwright,  and a humanist.  
He is an alumnus of the University of Sto. Tomas Faculty of
Medicine and Surgery;  and Tulane University School of Medicine.

He is a former president of the Philippine Biochemical Society in
America, former president of the Philippine Medical Association in
America, past president of the Philippine College of Physicians,
former president of the Medical Staff of Lutheran Hospital of
Brooklyn, former president of the American College of International
Physicians, New York-New Jersey Chapter, past charter president
of the United Asian Lions Club of the Lions International, former
president of the American Institute of Professional Thomasian,
President of the Philippine Academy of Arts and Science, and
founding president of the Royal Pontifical University of Santo
Tomas, Medical Association in the State of New York.

His fellowships include that of the Philippine College of
Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American
College of International Physicians, and both the American and
International College of Angiology.
Dr. Villanueva is an Honorary Fellow of the International Association of University Presidents (worldwide) and
is on the advisory board of the Internal Medicine World Report (U.S. and International Medical News).

He has been an evaluator of scientific papers for the New York Academy of Science and in the panel of judges
for the scientific exhibits, sponsored yearly by the New York Institute of Science and Technology since 1980.

He has received research grants from Squibb Laboratories, Wyeth Ayerst and recently with Sandoz for clinical
evaluation of ACE, Beta and Calcium Channel Blockers.

In 1980, he founded the Philippine Junior Science League in America with the objectives of coaching,
directing and morally supporting science oriented high school students to do research on the different
aspects of natural science.  Many of those who participated in the Philippine Junior Science League are now
accomplished professionals.  The league also gives scholarship grants to deserving high school students.

In 1982, he established the Hermogenes A. Santos Professional Chair Foundation with UST Class 58 at the
University of Sto. Tomas for the Advancement of the Science of Medicine Through  Research and Education.  
Similarly, he is one of the early endorser for the Carlos P. Romulo Professorial Chair at Indiana University with
Dr. Herman Wells and Dr. Patricio Mamot.

Dr. Villanueva is a holder of Doctorate Degrees in Medicine, Humanities, Science and Philosophy.  He has
written numerous medical articles and has authored 2 books, the Intermediary Metabolism (a text now in use
at U.S.T. Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry) and Hospital Nutrition.  He has given lectures here and
abroad on various topics, both medical and philosophical.  Furthermore, he has composed composed 50
lyrics to songs.  His songs has been put to music by such prominent composers as Prof. Rosendo Santos of
the University of the Philippines, Conservatory of Music; by Prof. Belen Manuel; Dr. Rowena Arieta; Mr. Michael
Dadap, the well known guitarist; and Rev. Fr. Benjamin Dino.

While in academia at the U.S.T. , Dr. Villanueva received the Outstanding Professor Award from the Supreme
Students Council Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry in 1970, Plaque of Merit from the U.S.T. Biochemical
Society and the Leon Ma. Guerrero Lectureship in 1967 and numerous certificates of merits and
appreciations.

As the former Medical Director of Lutheran Hospital of Brooklyn, he was awarded for his Outstanding
Continuing Medical Education Program by the Medical Board and the House Staff in 1976.  He was then
nominated and awarded as Outstanding Professional in Human Services in 1975 by the American Academy
of Human Services.  Similarly, and received the Outstanding Service Award in the East New York Community
from Hon. Senator Frederick Meyerson.

The United Filipino American Lawyers Association in America cited him as the Most Outstanding Filipino
Professional in the United States of America in Medical Journalism and Internal Medicine in 1982.

From the Philippine American Lawyers Association in America he received the Kawayan (Bamboo) Award for
academic achievements in 1982, while the New York Jaycees cited him as the Outstanding Filipino in
Community Leadership in Medicine during the same year.

In 1985, he received the Mayor Edward Koch's, Ethnic New Yorker Award for his outstanding contributions to
the community and to the quality of life in New York City.  In a similar line he received the Outstanding
Achievement Award from the Filipino American City Employees of New York in 1986.

From the American College of International Physicians, Dr. Villanueva was presented the Dr. Claude Bernard
Award in 1986, the Distinguished International Physicians in 1987, and many more certificates of
appreciations and merits.

From the University of Sto. Tomas, he was inducted in the Hall of Fame, Talaang Pangdangal for his
outstanding accomplishments in the field of Medicine in 1983.  He also received the Dr. Jose Tamayo
Presidential Award from the U.S.T. Medical Alumni Association in Manila in 1984.

Both the Marquis Who's Who in America East and the Men of Achievements from Cambridge, England include
Dr. Villanueva's biographical record for outstanding achievements.

In 1989, Dr. Villanueva received the title of the Pride of the Malay Race, Perlas ng Silangan Award from the
Philippine Junior Science League in America.

As a Lion of the Lions International, he was named the Lions of the Year in 1987 by the Phil-Am Lions Club,
and the Melvin Jones Fellow in 1989. Likewise, he is a recipient of two (2) 100% President Award from the
International President in 1989 and 1990, three (3) Extension Awards, two (2) District Governors Award in
1990 and 1991, Membership Achievements Award, Membership Key and Advancement Key, and a Gold
Medal of Merit from the Big Apple Lioness Club.

Dr. Villanueva was cited as the Best Dressed Filipino in 1991 by the Funfare International and recently was
awarded with a Plaque from Sandoz Pharmaceutical for his Outstanding Contributions in Clinical Research.

He is currently the Executive Director of the Philippine Junior Science League in America, the American
College of International Physicians, New York-New Jersey Chapter, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees to
the Hermogenes A. Santos Professorial Chair Foundation.  He is also the Extension Chairman of the Empire
City Medical Lions Club of 20K1 aside from being the Incumbent President of the Royal Pontifical University of
Sto. Tomas Medical Alumni Association in the State of New York.  Recently, he was appointed as Honorary
Member of the Center for Migration Studies based in Staten Island the Executive Director of the Philippine
Historical Society for the for the Barangay Sang Bergen Shrine to be constructed in Staten Island.

Dr. Villanueva is married to Dr. Imelda Garcia of Bulacan, a busy practicing Pediatrician in New York.  They
have five children:  Donna Mae is their oldest daughter who graduated Magna Cum Laude at Brooklyn
College.  She then pursued her Master of Arts in English Literature at New York University.  At present she is
an Associate Professor of English in all levels at California State University in Northdridge, Los Angeles.

Elaine, their second daughter, graduated Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing at Baruch College and is
currently a Project Director at KG Tabs, Inc. in Wall Street, New York.

Gerald graduated from Brooklyn College, B.A. Medicine, Summa Cum Laude and M.D. degree at the State
University of New York, Health and Science Center in Brooklyn.  Gerald is presently a second year resident in
Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York.

Paul graduated at the University of Buffalo with a B.A. Communication and is now with JC Penny in Buffalo.

Joseph is a junior at Sunny Stony Brook taking political science.  He plans to pursue a career in law.
