D.S.  "Jun"  Paraguya, M.D.
Lake Charles,  Louisiana
Guam's Most Valuable Person - A Builder of Empire
Business Tycoon and Civic Leader of Distinction
The extraordinary gift of transforming seemingly insurmountable
odds into opportunities for greater achievement  is essentially the
core of Dr. D.S. "Jun"  Paraguya's story.

Jun has always been an achiever, combining personal   talent and
initiative in a focused effort  to move  from one goal to the next.
Now an accomplished medical doctor with three diplomates to his
name, he says that for him, real achievements go beyond a mere
"I did it!" attitude.  In his case, the drive to succeed was inextricably
linked with a genuine selfless attitude, honed into his character by
the circumstances of his early life.  Looking back to the challenges
he faced then, Jun relishes the thought that his best rewards are
those he has helped other achieve.

Jun is married to Luzviminda   de Guzman Tahimic, who like
himself, is a medical doctor, but who specializes in the field of
pediatrics.  They have four children.

One of three sons in a family of nine, Jun lost his father at age ten.
This meant that he had to grow up pretty quickly because others in
the family depended on him.  This became the motivating factor in
his early achievements.  He graduated from high school at the age
of 14 and ranked second in his class.  At 16,  however, he had to stop schooling to run the family business
while his older siblings completed college.  Not one given to discouragement, Jun went on to complete his
studies as a working student, and upon graduation at the Sto. Tomas University in Manila, he received the
"meritissimus" distinction from the College of Medicine in 1964.

Opportunities beckoned for Filipino medical graduates to specialize and practice in the U.S.  Jun once again
siezed the opportunity to come to the U.S. and in the process was able to assist his younger brothers and
sisters through school.  All of them are now settled here, a chemical engineer, two physicians, an accountant
and a nutritionist.  In the meantime, June continued to advance in his own field leading to the attainment of
diplomates in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Family Practice.

For Jun, knowledge gained from his professional training is knowledge that must be imparted and shared
with others.  This is evident in his acceptance of professorship appointments at the Louisiana State University
Medical Center and a program directorship for the Family Practice Residency Program at the W.K. Moss
Regional Hospital in Lake Charles, L.A.  Although these positions demanded a lot of sacrifice, not only from
his family, but also to his private practice, Jun put a premium to being able to impart valuable knowledge to
future medical practitioners.  He also lent his time and services to the various professional organizations he
became affiliated with.

Currently serving as President of the Philippine College of Physicians, Jun is also a member of the Board of
Trustees of the American College of International Physicians and has been a delegate to the Association of
Philippine Physicians in America.    Recognized not only as a brilliant physician but as being highly   articulate
as well, June has held the editorship of "Progress Notes", a  newsletter of the Association of Philippine
Physicians in Louisiana/Gulfcoast since 1989.  He is also the editor of "Phil-Am News",  a newsletter of the
Philippine American Association of Southwest Louisiana, an organization which he founded in 1982.
