and also the executive producer of "The New Philippine Reports

For someone who claims not to have any journalistic background,
Veronica is truly a person to be admired for her audacity in trying
to penetrate and invade a "man's world". Her perseverance and
tenacity are qualities that contributed to her success as the only
woman Asian American publisher and editor of a newsmagazine.
To ensure success in her chosen field, she is involved in every
aspects of the details of running her business, including delivery
of her news magazine.
Like the other Twenty Outstanding Filipino-Americans, Veronica's
success was accomplished through hard work and great
determination. She epitomizes a true blooded-Filipina who
migrated to the United States to seek for greener pastures and
through "guts" and perseverance has made that dream come true.

Veronica was educated in the Philippines, acquiring her degree in Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, at
the University of the Philippines. She is a charter secretary of Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA)
Chicago Chapter, current Board of Directors AAJA Chicago Chapter , a member of Chicago Women in
Publishing and the Vice President of Chicago Philippine Press Club.
Recognizing her organizational talents and savy , she was elected as President of Chicago Lions Club;
Director-at-large, Philippine Chamber of Commerce; Director, Filipino International Couples Society; and Vice
President of Philippine American Congress of the Midwest.
When it comes to cultural involvement, Veronica is always in the frontline producing shows for the
community. She is the producer of the Annual Presentation of "Chicago's Prettiest Filipinas"; she holds
fashion shows for various designers and handles promotions for various Philippine talents.
Because of her great involvement in both socio and civic activities, Veronica has received a lot of awards and
recognitions. To mention a few, she was in "Who's Who among American Women," in 1984 edition; she was
an awardee of "Most Outstanding Asian," Asian American Coalition, 1986; "Most Outstanding Asian in
Journalism," Asian Human Services, 1986; recipient of "Community Builders Award," Mason Lodge No. 937,
1987; and Cavite Association of America's "Most Outstanding Filipino in the Midwest in Journalism 1989."
That same year, Veronica was honored as "Publisher of the Year 1989" under the auspices of the City of
Chicago's Minority Enterprise Development. During the recent Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce of
Chicago, she was one of the honorees during the "Recognition Night for Filipino Entrepreneurs in 1990." Last
year she was a recipient of 1991 Chicago Women, Hall of Fame, awarded by City of Chicago Commission
on Human Relations. Other accolades bestowed to the dynamic activist Veronica were awards of
"Women's Voices," "Women in Business Yellow Pages, and recently she was chosen as one of the "100
Chicago Women to Watch."
Indeed, Veronica highlights positive image for the Filipino-Americans in the Midwest region of the United
States. The TV program that she produces weekly does not only attract Filipino viewers but also serious
students who are interested to know and learn about the Philippines.
"One of the most worthy individual to be honored for her unselfish contributions to the Filipino-American
community as well as to the mainstream America, is Veronica V. Leighton. Chicago and its Midwest
communities are fortunate to have someone like Veronica who is actively participating in worthwhile projects
that benefit our local community as well as those in the Philippines," commented Philippine Consul General
in Chicago, Dr. Jaime Bautista.
Typical average day for Veronica is from four to six daily attendance to either a social, civic, cultural or political
activities. "For one thing, Veronica makes it a point to personally attend functions that has something to do
either with the Filipino-American community, the City or the State," remarked Art Nisperos of Chicago, one of
the 1991 awardees of the Twenty Outstanding Filipino-Americans in the United States project.
