Enrico I. Garcia,  M.D.
Terre Haute,  Indiana
Filipino National Leader • Recipient of Indiana's State Highest Award
As a  Filipino-American community  national leader,  Dr.  Enrico   I.
Garcia, has been consistent in his efforts in  promoting positive
Filipino-American image across the United States. He is a leader
whose main goal  is  to serve not only his own people,  but as well
as the mainstream community.

"I have known Dr. Garcia for a long time as a dedicated leader
whose tireless efforts and energies have been channeled
towards positive image for the Filipinos," commented Dr. Edith
Milan-Hipol of New York , one of the Twenty Outstanding
Filipino-Americans awardees this year.

Serving  as the  President   ( two terms, 1964-65 & 1965-66) of the
Philippine Medical  Association of New York,  one of the first
Filipino medical  groups  in  the country,  Dr. Garcia, realized the
need to form a  united and national  organization  for  the rapidly
growing population of Philippine physicians in the United States.
Together with other pioneering leaders,  he  founded and
organized the Philippine  Medical  Association  in  America
(PMAA),  the  forerunner  of the Association of Philippine
Physicians  in America (APPA) which was founded five years later.
"Most of the Filipino  physicians in America were just then in  the  final phase of completing  their residency
requirements  and,  there were just then a handful physicians who had   established  private medical
practice,"  recalled Dr. Garcia.  "When  several  out of state  Filipino physicians came to New York to attend a
social function  sponsored by  t he PMA of New York,  we seized the opportunity  and formed the first Philippine
Medical Association in America (PMMA), National.

Dr. Garcia was unanimously  elected as the founding president of the PMAA,  and again, was  re-elected the
following  year after "making waves  as the Founding President.   He  is  formally  recognized as the organizer
and founder of PMAA, National,  by  his peers.

"Dr. Garcia is a  role model and an inspiration to the Filipinos in the United States.  He  is just simply  terrific.
As  busy  as   he  is,  he always manages to find time  for community services impacting  not only the Filipinos
but the mainstream community  as well," commented one of the pioneers of PMAA, National. "His sincere
involvement in civic activities and  humanitarian projects earned him  numerous accolades and awards. The
mainstream American  Medical Association  accorded him their "Physician Recognition Award" in 1971, '74,
'77, '80, '83 and '87. That's six times as many as anyone had received from AMA. That's highlighting positive
Filipino image in the highest degree, don't you agree?"

Indeed Dr. Garcia's commendable achievements for humanitarian services  gloriously spotlighted the talents
of Filipinos.  The Boy  Scouts of America  honored him with their  Service Recognition Award, and  the New
Jersey  Policemen's  Benevolent   Association  selected him for their Community Service Award, and also the
Ocean County Optimist International bestowed to him Optimist's  much-sought-after Man of the Year for
Community Services award.

Relocating to Terre Haute, Indiana eighteen years ago,  Dr. Garcia, unselfishly shared his leadership talents
to various civic organizations in that region. His relentless efforts in caring and proving humanitarian  services
to his fellow man did not go unnoticed by  the State of Indiana,  home state of former Vice President Dan
Quayle. The Governor of Indiana chose Dr. Enrico I.  Garcia in 1990 to receive the highest award bestowed
upon an Indiana citizen, the prestigious "Sagamore of the Wabash Award."

In 1985, he was awarded the Terre Haute's "Professional of  the Year" award for " services  rendered to the
citizens of Terre Haute, Indiana." Continuously, for more  than three decades now, Dr. Garcia has gathered
one top award after another, all for his unselfish services to the mainstream community.
He was President of Leadership Terre Haute Alumni Association, Board Member of the Boy Scout of Ocean
County, and of the Vigo County; VIP Chairman of the United Celebral Palsy, Legislative Commission of the
Indiana State Medical Society;  and others.

Fidel Ramos. In 1962, he received his degree in Medicine from the University of Santo Tomas.  Then
completed his internship and residency trainings in hospitals in New Jersey and Staten Island, New York.  He
is a Fellow in General Surgery and a Research Fellow  in Liver Transplant and Lymphangiography. Married to
the  former Barbara Bancook of New York, New York, The  Garcias are blessed with ten  children .
