Dr. Edita Pangyarihan Milan-Hipol is one of the very few Filipino
women who holds the rank of Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army
Reserve, Medical Corps., two ranks from a Brigidaire General.
Recently completing a three-year course from the Commanding
and General Staff College Course at the 2091st U.S. Army
Reserve Force School at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware,
Edita commands respect from her peers, and naturally, from
those under the rank of Lt. Colonel. Given a few more years, Edita
will be soon in a less than a handful Filipino woman with a rank
of a General.
Her visibility in the Army Reserve as a high ranking military official
highlights the reservoir of talents of Filipinos - more specially a
woman at that! Noticed one of her friends from New York:
"Speaking of role model and inspiration for the
Filipino-Americans, Dr. Edita Milan-Hipol is dynamic and living
example. I really get a kick when I see every Tom, Dick and Harry
of any U.S. Armed Forces in uniform standing at attention and
giving Edita a salute.
With her sincere desire to share her military training and
organizational talents to the community, Edita actively participates

in numerous organizations and projects that are both humanitarian and cultural in nature. Reigning since
1986 as President of the Philippine American Union of New York Organizations (PAUNYO), an umbrella
organization of six major groups around the New York region, Edita's thrust, whenever she has an
opportunity, is to provide assistance to the unfortunate Filipinos in depressed provinces in the Philippines.
PAUNYO slowed down on its activities when Edita was called by the U.S. Army to participate in the Persian
Gulf War. "We're having difficulty gaining momentum to re-start. However, I wish to revive the enthusiasms of
the member organizations soon," explained Edita. "Our grandest social affair is sponsoring a Miss
Philippines project to raise funds for natural disaster victims in the Philippines as well as to provide financial
assistance to those in dire need." Edita is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ilocano-American
Association, Inc. of New York, an organization she encourages and supports to sponsor cultural
presentations for the mainstream community. Active with various projects of the Ilocano group, Edita was
extolled by the Association last August of this year and awarded a plaque of appreciation for her outstanding
contributions to the community in general and to the Association in particular. We can always count on Dr.
Milan-Hipol's unselfish supports to all of our endeavors," remarked one officer of the Ilocano-American
Association. "We're proud that Dr. Edita Milan-Hipol, born and raised in Bangar, La Union, is a pure-blooded
Ilocana. Her father, the late Primitivo Milan and her mother, Ceferina Pangyarihan, both came from Bangar."
In the tri-state area composing of the states of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, Edita's enthusiasm in
promoting positive Filipino image is well-known among her compatriots. Active as a member of the North
East Federation of Philippine American Organizations, Edita actively involves herself with numerous
humanitarian projects. When a group of twenty Filipino-American physicians formed a medical mission to
assist the Mt. Pinatubo disaster victims, Edita was quick to volunteer her professional services at her own
personal expense. Edita stayed in the Philippines for two weeks assisting victims in Pampanga and
Zambales. "The group brought medicines, medical supplies, medical equipments and clothing. Most of us
that brought our own personal medical equipments donated and left them to the Filipino physicians in the
region," recalled Edita.
Just recently married last May to Avelino I. Hipol, a banker from Buang, La Union. Edita completed her
Pre-Medical Associate of Arts from the University of the Philippines. In 1962, she acquired her Doctor of
Medicine degree from the University of the East - Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in Manila. After
two years of Residency in Chest Diseases at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Philippines, Edita opted to
pursue advance medical education and joined the Rochester General Hospital and later the Roosevelt
Hospital, both in New York, for her Internship and Residencies in Pediatrics. She's currently a Clinic Physician
for Montefiore-Rikers Island Health Services and maintain a private practice in Richmond Hill, N.Y.
