LUISITA SUMAYLO NILLAS
Brooklyn  New York
Assertive and Compassionate Leader - Her Thrust  is for the Youth
Luisita Sumaylo Nilla's main thrust as leader whenever she's
involved in a project on local, national or international level has
always been the youth.  The Filipino-American youth and  those in
the   Philippines are the usual recipients of her generosity. But
unlike other Filipino community leaders, Luisita focused on the
wayward street children of Manila and the orphanages in the
Philippines. And in spite of her  daily hectic scheduled and
planned activities as the Administrator of their family-owned
Lincoln Medical Center and the Church Avenue Clinic in Brooklyn,
New York,   Luisita  devotes all  of her free  time  to civic
organizations and humanitarian projects.

Active with various groups ever since she first arrived in the United
States in 1970, Luisita's community involvement heightened in
1980 with the Philippine Medical Association in America (PMAA),
during the presidency of Sir E. Gary Villanueva, MD, ScD, FACP,
whereby  she actively participated in the founding of the Ladies
Auxiliary to the PMAA,  National. And with PMAA,  she was
instrumental  in establishing the Free Multiphasic Screening
Project which has been servicing medically underserved
communities of New York City with high concentrations of illegal
alien.  In this project, on  top of her personal  financial  donation to
maintain the project,  she personally assisted with patient registration and patient flow,  distributing bread and
coffee to the many homeless patients that the PMAA screened during 1980 to 1988.

"Her personal involvement with the activities of the Philippine Junior Science League in America as a
benevolent benefactor is highly commendable. She always spearheads all of our youth scientific activities
from the youth seminars,  debates and cultural presentations.," remarked one of the officers of the Philippine
Junior Scientific League. "Her particpation is invaluable to us. She is truly a role model and inspiration to all of
us."

Aware of the need to recognize and to preserve the rich Filipino tradition and culture,  she almost
single-handedly initiated the LAPMA Beauty Pageant - The Binibining Silahis, and the first fashion show Linea
Pilipina of Nick Libramonte. As usual whenever Luisita is involved,  the proceeds from any fundraising venture
went to numerous humanitarian causes.

In  1985,  she assumed the Presidency of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American College of International
Physicians, New York -  New Jersey Chapter up to the present,  members prevailed her to stay in that
prestigious elected position  for her outstanding humanitarian services and in uplifting the prestige of the
group by sponsoring viable projects benefiting the mainstream community.

Invited to join the Auxiliary to the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA), the most influential
and largest Filipino professional organization outside of the Philippines, Luisita was first elected  as a
member of the Board of Governors, then as a Secretary, and in 1989, she was unchallenged in the position of
President-Elect.  When she took over the helm of leadership the following year, it was very  timely  because
APPA then was in the verge of bankruptcy.  APPA was not only out of funds, but they were in the negative side
of the ledger. Luisita, together with several dynamic members of the Auxiliary ,successfully raised funds
through their  Miss APPA project and infused the necessary  funds needed to  the mother  association.

"Together with  the  APPA  Auxiliary under the able leadership of Luisita Nillas,  we were able to gallantly
survive and revived the APPA," commented Lakeland, Tennessee Vice Mayor Dr. Lupo "Sonny" Carlota, who
was then APPA President.

An avid supporter of youth  oriented activities, Luisita channeled most of her APPA leadership efforts towards
more emphasis in assisting the youth in the Philippines. Proceeds from fundraising projects were used for
construction of several  artisian wells  in rural areas for the support of an orphanage and for the victims of Mt.
Pinatubo.

Luisita hail from San Jose, Negro Oriental of a very influential and afluent political family, the Teves-Gravador-
Sumaylo clan.  She graduated valedictorian from St. Paul's College in Dumaguete City and acquired her
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from South Western University where shewas crowned Miss Pharmacy in
1959 and later reigned as Miss South Western University in 1960.

Married to Dr. Alfonso Nillas, Governor of the Association of Pilipino Physicians in America, they  are blessed
with two sons, Michael, 23 and Alphonso, 20.

Mrs. Nillas has been honored with numerous awards and titles for her leadership and humanitarian
endeavors.
