Nacianceno T. Largoza,  M.D.
Philadelphia,  Pennsylvania
Illustrious Founder of UST Medical Alumni Association
in the Tri-State and in America
The University of Santo Tomas, located by the busy  and buzzing
Espana Street in Manila, is fortunate to have a distinguished
alumni whose indefatigable energy is focused in assisting UST
maintain contacts with its medical  graduates residing in the
United States and Canada. Dr. Nacianceno T. Largoza, Class of
'55, provides a unique service to his alma mater.  He not only
founded in 1982 the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni
Association, Tri-State Chapter, composing of Delaware, New
Jersey  and Pennsylvania;  but he also co-founded the University
of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association in America five years
later in 1987.

"Whenever it is time for the UST administration  and  faculty
members to thank someone for their effective tracking of its
medical graduates, the name of Dr. Nacianceno Largoza always
plays a prominent role. The Dominican Fathers  have nothing  but
a lot of admiration, respect and love for the doctor from
Philadelphia," observed   one of officers of UST Medical Alumni
Association. "His unquestioned loyalty to UST is admirable."

Unlike  many Filipino-American Thomasian physicians, his
unmatched loyalty  to his alma mater and to his country for that
matter is difficult to fathom. While majority of his colleagues in the medical profession were very anxious to
leave the Philippines to pursue their medical training abroad,  Dr. Largoza, opted to stay put in the country and
offered his professional services to his compatriots. Immediately after graduating from medical  school, Dr.
Largoza took the Philippine Medical Board examinations and after passing the exams,  he headed back to his
province where for two years he completed his Rotating General Residency at  the Quezon Memorial Hospital
in Lucena, Quezon. For almost nine years, he dedicated his professional services by opening  a General
Private Practice in his hometown,  Tiaong, Quezon. "I had fun doing it and I am glad I stayed and served our
people," related Dr.. Largoza.

In 1965,  noticing that most of his contemporaries were either in the United States or other parts of  the world,
Dr. Largoza  decided to take and passed the ECFMG - Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates -
exams, the hardest hurdle for foreign medical graduates. Less than a year later,  he joined Northeastern
Hospital in Philadelphia as a Rotating Intern. Almost six years later,  after fulfilling all higher educational
requirements,  Dr. Largoza opened his solo Private Medical Practice in 1971 in Philadelphia. He is a
Diplomate with the American Board of Family Practice,  and  is a Fellow of the American Academy  of Family
Physicians.

In the seventies,  his involvement with numerous organizations and humanitarian  projects were all  focused
in and around the Eastern Seaboard.  He was very active with the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practice
and was an active staff member of the Delaware Memorial Hospital. In 1978,  while actively participating in
civic organizations and highlighting positive Filipino image,   Dr. Largoza was inducted into the U.S. Army
Reserve with the rank of a Major.

In the early eighties, Dr. Largoza's numerous community involvements were duly recognized by naming him
as an Outstanding Pilipino for Professional Achievement by the Delaware Valley Association of Pilipinos.

As the year 1980's rolled by, his  ardent desire to reach out to other Filipino professionals was materialized.
He founded, and was the Founding President of the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association
Tri-State, comprising of Delaware, New Jersey and Philadelphia. He toiled relentlessly to build the
organization into what is now one of the most influential group in the region. For his tireless leadership, Dr.
Largoza was unanimously awarded by the officers and members of the UST group distinct honors as a
distinguished alumni. In the later part of the decade,  together with  other leaders,  he co-founded the
University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association in America - a powerful group with a nationwide scope.
Two years later, the Tomasian physicians in the United States elected Dr. Largoza as its National President.
At the same time, the different organizations under the umbrella of Pilipino Executive Council of Greater
Philadelphia  also elected Dr. Largoza as  their President.

"His dynamic leadership is an inspiration to the Filipinos. He is a role model  and great leader," declared one
of the Filipino old timers in the Philadelphia area.

In spite of  his hectic schedules in his private family practice and his involvement with civic affairs, Dr. Largoza
and his charming wife, Isabel, generously allocate their spare time playing with granddaughter Alexis Isabel
L. Gershoff; and grandsons Rion, Zachary  and Brandon  Z. Largoza.
