An Educator, A Newswriter, A Poet, A Playwright, A Theater
Director. She is none other than , Dr. Aurora Catalan Bushman.
Originally from Makati, Philippines. She obtained her B.S. in
Elementary Education at the Philippine Normal College, M.S. in
Reading at the St. Francis College, Indiana; Media - Documentary
Video, Radio, T.V. and Animation at the Ohio University ; and her
PH.D in Reading at the Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
Her teaching experiences include: Kindergarten to Sixth Grade,
Philippine Public Schools, Makati, Rizal District; Minster Local
Schools (Language Arts); Wright State University (Reading
Improvement Course); Reading Specialist; Elementary Principal;
Reading Supervisor; Permanent Reading Teacher; and
Educational Researcher.
She was Speaker to several workshops throughout the country as
follows: International reading Association, San Antonio, Texas;
Ohio Council of International Reading Association, Columbus,
Ohio; Great Lakes Regional International Reading Conference;
The Teaching of Reading: Diagnostic and Corrective Procedures,
Principals and Supervisors in the Philippines; Documentary on
Comparative Study of the Teaching of Reading in Different

Countries, Yarmouk University, Jordan; Administration of the Reading Program, Indiana Reading Association
at St. Francis College; Teaching Reading in the Content Area, Dayton, Ohio; Teen Reading Series In-service
Coordinator. She was also Guest speaker at the Asian Pacific American Celebration: American Veterans
Hospital, Columbus, Ohio on May 20, 1994 and guest Speaker at the Philippine Normal College and the
University of the Philippines in July 1994.
She has held several offices at the Ohio Council of International Reading Association as: President, Auglaize
County; Field Representative Area 4 OCIRA; Chairperson, Talented and Gifted Committee, Administrators
Committee, State Literacy (for 5 years), International Literacy Committee. She is also Chairperson,
Language Arts, Reading, Science, Right to Read, Competency Testing. Having worked with OCIRA and being
involved in several of its undertakings, she has launched the Dr. Aurora Catalan Bushman Scholarship Grant
for OCIRA.
She is also very active in the Filipino community and is President of the Philippine American Society of Central
Ohio; Advisor, Philippine Seniors of Columbus. She is concurrently undertaking several projects to help
promote the Philippines throughout the world by presenting a video documentary about the country and in the
process of negotiating the exchange of Filipino and American teachers, between the Philippines and the
United States. "I envision in assisting and providing the latest educational techniques for our Filipino
teachers by providing grants and fellowship offered in this country for the advancement of education,"
explained Dr. Bushman who in addition to highlighting Fil-Am positive image locally, spearheads the
sending new textbooks to the Philippines.
Throughout her years in the United States, she has never ceased to develop positive promotion of the
Philippines. She has always worked very closely with the Cleveland Philippine Consulate, and makes sure
that she is there whenever she is needed especially where the unification of all the Filipinos in Ohio is
concerned. As Consul General Vic Vitug described Dr. Bushman: "She is the link between our country, the
Philippines, and our adopted country, the United States of America." Indeed, Dr. Bushman is doing a
marvelous job in highlighting positive image for the Filipinos!"
