Andres R. Sabio, JR. was born in Naga City, Philippines. He went
to school in Naga Elementary School and graduated from high
school with high honors at the Ateneo de Naga. He obtained his
Associate in Arts and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University
of Santo Tomas. In 1958, he served as Adjunct Resident at the
Quirino Labor Hospital in Quezon City and was the recipient of the
Most Outstanding Resident Award. In 1959 he was appointed
Junior Resident at the Naga Provincial Hospital however he
decided to migrated to the United States the same year.
He arrived in Charleston, West Virginia in April, 1959 and did his
Rotating Internship at the Kanawha Valley Hospital. Afterwards he
moved to Buffalo, New York where he spent his first year
Residency in General Practice at Our Lady of Victory Hospital. At
that time the residents in this hospital were being exploited and
overworked. He negotiated with the administration for a fair and
equitable work schedule and salary increase. He was successful
to the delight and amazement of his co-residents.
In 1961, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio and did his Residency in
General Surgery at Marymount Hospital and Lutheran Hospital. In
order to qualify for the American Board Of Surgery Examination, he

served for two years surgical preceptorship under Dr. Middleton Lambright, Chief of Surgery at Forest City
Hospital. After he obtained his Ohio Medical License in 1958 , he served as Director of the Emergency Room
at Forest City Hospital for five years.
He went into private practice of General Surgery and Family Medicine in 1973 and has developed a busy
practice up to the present. In 1978, he joined the Army National Guard and rose to the rank of Colonel and
served as Chief of Professional Services of the 112th Medical Brigade. Upon his retirement from the
National Guard in 1992, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal of the ULSL Armed Forces. He
continues to serve in the United States Army Reserve with a rank of Colonel.
His involvement in the Philippine community is quite remar-kable and worthwhile. He was a founding
lifetime member of APPA (Association of Philippine Physicians in America). He served as the first chairman
of the membership committee; served as Treasurer for 8 years; Board of Governor for 4 years, Vice President
in 1982 and is presently member o the House of Delegates since 1992. He was the Founding President in
1974 of APPO (Association of Philippine Physicians in Ohio) and presently is the Executive Director since
1992. Every year he actively participates as a Surgeon in the annual APPO medical-surgical mission to the
Philippines. This year the surgical mission will be in San Fernando, Pampanga.
In 1991, Dr. Sabio was Executive Director of the President Aquino Mt. Pinatubo Disaster Fund Committee in
Ohio. The committee raised a substantial amount of money and he hand-carried the check to Archbishop
Aniceto of San Fernando Pampanga. Dr. Sabio and his committee also were able to collect 200 Balikbayan
boxes of relief supplies consisting of medicines, foods and clothing and airlifted them to the Philippines for
the eruption victims.
Dr. Sabio was the Founding President in 1979 of PAM (Philippine American Ministry) of the Diocese of
Cleveland. The Ministry sponsors a priest from the Philippines to take postgraduate studies in Cleveland
and at the same time serve the Spiritual needs of the Philippine community.
He has been an active member since 1968 of PASO (Philippine American Society of Ohio). He served as its
vice president and for many years served as member of the board of directors. PASO is the mother
organization of the various Philippine groups in Cleveland.
He was the Founding President in 1992 of FAMMOS (Filipino American Military Medical Officers Society ).
The society's aim is to unite the many Filipino medical officers around the country, and become visible in
order to enhance the positive image of the Philippine physicians. One of the highest Filipino ranking military
officers serving the United States Armed Services, Dr. Sabio holds the rank of full colonel in the U.S. Army
Reserve, a step away from being a general.
For the past several years of existence, these associations which he founded have helped a lot of people in
the field of medicine by way of recognition, had made several donations to charities, and sent
medical-surgical mission to the Philippines, all of which created a positive image for the association and its
whole membership.
Devoted family man, he is married to Morada Aquias Sabio, M.D., an anesthesiologist, for 35 years. They
have 8 children and five grandchildren. They reside in Gates Mills, Ohio. Their children are : J. Daniel, a
certified Financial Planner married to Gigi Dumadag, M.D. , an internist specializing in Allergy and
Immunology and they have 2 children, JD and Arielle. They live in St. Louis, Missouri. Margie is a Fashion
Designer, married to Robert Brunetto, a Business Manager with Japan American Communication
Corporation. They reside in New York City. Elaine is a Computer Engineer and lives in New York City.
Andrew is pursuing a degree in Business Administration at Cleveland State University and is married to
Nicole Scully a Fashion Designer. They have 2 children, Andrew and Allysa. Christine is a Lawyer and is
married to John Socrates, a Metallurgical Engineer. They reside in West Lake, Ohio. Neysa is pursuing a
career in Computer Programming and has a son, Geoffrey . Morada Jr. is pursuing a degree in Dentistry at
Loyola University in Chicago . Vicki is a sophomore in high school at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio.
In his free time, when he finds one, loves to travel, enjoys chess, swimming, jogging, and most of all
finds pleasure in playing with his grandchildren.
