Maximino "Max" P. Basco, M.D.
Chicago, Illonois
Pioneering Founder of Organizations
A Fil-Am National Leader
Leadership is one of the best qualities of this Batangueno,
nephew of former Philippine Vice President Salvador Laurel, born
and raised in Batangas City, Philippines.  Describing himself as
"a man of varied interests," this prominent doctor who is vice
chairman of the Department of Radiology at the Holy Cross
Hospital in Chicago, Illinois,  believes that patience is necessary
for the success of any endeavor. Adding that original thinking,
initiative and resourcefulness also count.

Proving  that  actions speak  louder  than  words,  Max,  as  he
wants his friends to call him, can be counted as one of the
effective and articulate national leaders  of Filipino-Americans.
His community services spanned more than two decades. With
the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA),  the
largest professional organization in North America,  Max served
as Delegate of PMA Chicago for more than two years, and later
was elected as member of the Board of Governors. In 1989,  Max
was elected by APPA delegates as Floor Leader of the House of
Delegates. Two years later, he run for APPA treasurer capping the
position with hardly any opposition. In the recent 23rd Annual
Convention of APPA in New Orleans,  Max was unchallenged to
the same position extending his term up to the summer of next
year. As an off-shot of his active participation with APPA,  Max co-founded and is currently vice president of the
Filipino-American Military Medical Officers Society (FAMMOS), an up and coming organization of high ranking
Filipinos in the Armed Forces of the United States serving as medical officers.  Holding the rank of Lt. Colonel
with the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Reserves,  he served as commander of Troop Medical Center
(Infantry) at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin., and for six years, he was chief of service of the U.S. 801st General
Hospital in Chicago.

A graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, he has been a licensed physician
since 1972.  He regards his field in diagnostic radiology as dynamic and highly challenging, being one of the
beneficiaries of modern technology breakthroughs. His love for his alma mater led him to be co-founder and
current vice president  of the Thomasian Medical Alumni Choral Society of Chicago. which performed at the
APPA Convention in New Orleans.

Max had his one year internship at the United States Naval Hospital in Subic Bay, Zambales and in Columbus
Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. He completed his residency at Philippine General Hospital and at
Northwestern University in Chicago. He was attending staff and a consultant in radiology and nuclear
medicine at the Mother Cabrini Hospital, Chicago for 3 years starting in 1975.  He is presently an attending
physician and consultant at the Holy Cross Hospital's Department of Radiology, Medicine, Ultrasound and
Special Procedures.

His efforts to highlight positive Filipino image have been vi-sible and taking notice among his peers. His
professional affiliations include such diverse groups as the Philippine Radiological Society of North America
as a founding member and currently secretary;  Chicago Medical Society,  Illinois State Medical Society, Illinois
State Radiological Society, Chicago Radiological Society,  American Medical Association, American College of
Nuclear Medicine, Radiological Society of North America and the Association of Philippine Practicing
Physicians Of America;  past president of the UST Medical Alumni of the Midwest and past president of the
Philippine Medical Association in Chicago and Midwest (PMACM).

In almost all this affiliations, he never content himself as a member.  He tries to perform and contribute as
much as he can to be able to undertake projects and programs of any of the association wherein he is a
member or an officer.   It has been proven correct especially when he became President of the UST Alumni of
the Midwest when he established the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Faculty Development Program
which subsidizes the advance education of professionals in the UST medical school -- allowing them to study
in the United States, particularly in the University of Illinois and University of Chicago.  This is an on going
project which benefits a lot of Filipino students.  When he was President of the PMA Chicago, he not only
continued to work on the projects initiated by his predecessors, but he embarked on several others and has
been successful.  Max claims that he loves doing all these because "there is joy in achieving and developing
something."

As a member of the Filipino-American community in Chicago, he found time for community-oriented activities.
He served as vice-chairman of the Philippine Independence Week celebration.  It was during his leadership,
the PMACM became the first Filipino organization to sponsor the piano and marimba recital of noted artist
Ernestina Crisologo-Jose, held  at the Preston Bradley Hall of the Public Library Cultural Center.  This concert
very much enhanced the positive image of the Filipinos.  He is currently the Core Organizer and Director for
the Midwest of the Philippine National Centennial Commission (1898-1998).

A founder of so many organizations, to mention few, Max co-founded and currently vice president of KAPBAT
(Kapisan ng Batanguenos); founding  member and incumbent auditor of Philippine Economic and Cultural
Endowment (PEACE) U.S.A.; co-founder and past president of Batangas Club of Midwest; co-founder and
member of the board of trustees of Jose P. Laurel Memorial Foundation.  Max is married to the  former  Evelyn
Ganaden, a medical graduate from the University of the East, class '68. She is currently a pathologist
connected with the Walter Memorial Hospital.  They have four children:  Michael, 22, a B.S. Finance graduate
from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Maria Teresa, 21, a senior pre med at Loyola University in Chicago.
Martelino, 18, a sophomore at University of Iowa.  Marvin, 16, a sophomore at Hinsdale High School in
Hinsdale,  Illinois.#
