The First Filipino Elected To A Public Office In The South
To be elected to a public office in an area where one is a minority,  
it shows that he was chosen for his positive activities and
qualitifcations,  and not for his race.

In 1987, Dr. Casama decided to run for the office of Coroner of
Washington Parish (County), State  of Louisiana, a public office.  
Overcoming  ethnic outcries by his opponents, Dr. Casama stood
his ground  stating his pride in both his true country, the
Philippines, and his adopted country, the United States. Dr.
Casama  won an overwhelming victory and has been Coroner
since, serving two terms, with aspirations for a third straight term  
coming up next year. Dr.  Casama was also appointed City
Physician for the City of Bogalusa in 1971 and continues to serve
the position.

During his first campaign for the Coroner, Dr. Casama promised
the citizens of his parish that he would establish a  social
detoxification center for the poor people of his parish. He kept
good  his promise  and founded the Seven Acres Substance
Abuse Center(SASAC) where he was its first Chairman of the
Board, and current Medical Director. In 1992-1993, he volunteered
to serve as Medical Director for the Unity House, a  similar
substance abuse center for female cocaine addicts.

Dr. Casama began his pre-med courses at the University of the Philippines in 1954  and completed them at
the Far Eastern University  Institute of Medicine  in Manila, where he completed his graduate courses and an
internship, in 1963. From 1963-1964, he finished his   residency at Far Eastern University Hospital.

Following his medical studies in the  Philippines, Dr. Casama continued his medical studies in the nited
States. From 1964-1965 he completed an internship and residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Elizabeth,
New Jersey, under the Seton Hall College  of Medicine, NJ Program. In 1966, Dr. Casama moved to New
Orleans , Louisiana, where he completed his residency at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Tulane
Medical Program. He finished in 1969 and moved to Bogalusa, Louisiana to work as a staff physician at  the
Washington-St. Tammany Regional Medical Center. He is still in private practice  and is the Executive Medical
Director and Founder of the Regional Health Care Center,  a multi-physician clinic which is the  first of its kind
in Bogalusa.

Dr. Casama currently serves as the Medical Director for the following facilities: Rest Haven Nursing Home,
First Home Health Agency, Family Home Health Agency, Puckett Laboratories, Lifeline Ambulance Service
Inc., Washington Parish Red Cross ,        Washington Parish Rape Crisis Center, and American Red Cross
(Washington Parish).

He is  the  president  of the local chapter of the  American Heart Association, and also the Chairman of the
Board of Casama-Phil  International and Vice Chairman of Mitchell Casama Corporation. Dr. Casama is
currently a member of the following organizations: American Society of Internal Medicine, International
Association of Coroner's and Medical Examiners, National Association  of Medical Examiners, Louisiana
State Medical Society,  American Medical Association,  Washington Parish Medical Society,  Rotary Club
International, and  Volunteer, Special Olympics.

Since 1991, he serves as a consultant in Internal Medicine at the Washington -St. Tammany Regional Medical
Center and a Clinical Associate with the Tulane School of Medicine.  Dr. Casama is a past Assistant Clinical
Instructor in Medicine at the Tulane School of Medicine. In 1975 he served as a Clinical Preceptor in Family  
Practice at the Louisiana State Medical School.

Dr. Casama is also co-founder and past president of the Association of Philippine Practicing  Physicians of
America,( A.P.P.A.)  LA/ Gulf coast Chapter and was the past president of the Philippine American United
Council of Louisiana, (P.A.U.C.L.A.).

Dr. Casama has also volunteered his time conducting exam  pre-physicals for the Special Olympics and also
conducting yearly examinations for the mentally retarded people in Washington Parish.  He has been the
team physician for the Bogalusa High School Lumberjacks football team for the past five years.  Dr. Casama
also founded the Bogalusa Association for Christian Healing , (B.A.C.H.),  composed of physicians and  
ancillary personnel.  He also spent one year of  missionary work in  Kapangan,  Benguet,  Mt. Province, in the
Philippines. He vows to continue his services to God and his fellowmen.

He was born and raised in Pandacan, Manila. He has three children : Beth, Roger II , and Cindy.  He is  
married to the charming Cynthia Bercaw of Bogalusa, Louisiana.
