Samuel "Sammy" B. Ramos Brownstown, Michigan Community Leader With Great Determinationr
|
Samuel B. Ramos, popularly and fondly called just plain Sam by
friends, is a living institution in Brownstown Township, Michigan.
Moving from Chicago and Allen Park in 1980, Sam has since
then been a community fixture, so to speak, when it comes to
serving the mainstream community. Brownstown Times, the local
newspaper, in one of its issues wrote: "Samuel B. Ramos claim
to fame is receiving the Lions International Club's '100 Percent
President Award.' There are two difficult requirements for this
honor - only an exceptional Lion can become president, but he
also must organize a new club during his presidential tenure."
Sam is instrumental in the organization of Lions Club in
Brownsville in 1982. Becoming its charter secretary, he was later
elected vice president and in time, became the club's president.
Sammy was vital in the organization of the Ecorse-Rouge Lions
Club in September 1986 and in February the following year, he
helped establish the Greater Detroit Fil-American Lions Club, the
first of its kind in the Michigan area.
"Sam is a big asset for our township," declared one of the Lions
Club charter members. "He is always around to give us a big
hand whenever we call on his services."

In the historical manual of the Brownstown Lions Club, Sammy's vital contributions were articulated. " The
idea of forming a club was the brainchild of Sam Ramos. Like Melvin Jones, the Father of Lionism, Sam is
an insurance businessman. In the exercise of this profession, he realized that his business requires a
two-way traffic - his clients give him business, he returns service to them. This sense of service prompted
him to do more, not only for his clients but also for any one who may need his service. Thus an idea was
conceived, and an organization was born."
Sam Ramos attributes the founding of the Lions Club with the assistance of two other friends. Vic Bonot who
became charter president, and Dr. Alex Mataverde who became the Club's second president. "Brownstown
Lions Club was officially installed in July 10, 1982 --- twelve years ago. From the triumvirate of SAV: Sam, Alex
and Vic, twenty-two others joined us to be sworn-in to the organization of humanitarian servants," recalled
Sam.
Devoting his energy and time to formulating a stronger club coupled with a solid base with one of the
mainstream community's major organizations, Sam made sure that the prominent members of the Lions
Club, both locally and internationally, are aware of the positive image that he and his "kababayan" Lions are
highlighting --- the ability to organize, to develope and to lead.
As president of the Brownstown Lions, Sam garnered more accolades than any local president had. In its
twelve years of existence. In 1987, when he was president, just barely five years from the Club's charter night,
Brownstone sponsored its second new club, with Sam receiving his first "Extension Award." The feat was a
record. It became the only club in the State to have sponsored two clubs in a less than a 12 month period.
Sam Ramos who originally hails from Buguey, Cagayan, works for Prudential Insurance since 1972. A
graduate of Bachelor of Science in Commerce from Far Eastern University in Manila in 1965, is one of the
founders of the Philippine American Catholic Organization of U.S.A. He is currently a commissioner of the
Philippine American Basketball Conference of Michigan. #
