Reynaldo G. Reyes, son of  former mayor Telesforo Reyes and
Brigida Gutierrez of Alitagtag, Batangas, started playing the piano
at the age of five taking lessons from his four older sisters.  In
1945, he studied piano with Miss Amanda Cabrera from the
nearby town of Taal.  For more than a year, he used to walk 17
kilometers from Alitagtag to Taal for piano lessons until he
enrolled at the newly opened U.S.T. Conservatory of Music in
Manila.  In the same year, he represented the music school at the
first Music Festival held in Manila. In 1947, the school has a
change of Directorship and Julio Esteban Anguita became the
new Director and became Reyes’ teacher.  In 1948, he was
appointed official accompanist of the school although he was
barely 14 years old.  He finished his High School studies at U.S.T.
and at the age of 17, Arrigo Pola, tenor and teacher of the famous
Luciano Pavarotti, chose Reyes to be his accompanist in manila
and in his voice studio.  For the next two years he gave numerous
concerts with Mr. Pola and many artists in the Philippines as
soloist or accompanist.  He was also awarded the Accompanist
of the Year Award in 1952 for these numerous concerts by the
Association of Damas de Filipinas.  In 1953, the French
Government awarded him a scholarship to study at the famous
Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Paris.  While in
France, he represented the Phlippines in the Rencontre Internationale des Etudiants in Southern France.  He
also was sent to Germany by the Conservatoire as an exchange student to study at the Weikersheim
Musicalische Institut fur Musick in Wurttemberg.  He participated in the Chamber Music Competition and won
First Price for Radio Stuttgart.  In 1957, he won the most coveted award of the conservatoire, the Premier Prix
in Piano, premiere Medaille in Solfege, and Deuxieme prix in Chamber Music.  In the same year, he went back
to the Philippines to give a series of concerts ans was award Musician of the Year by the Philippine Promotion
Promotion Foundation Scholarship to study at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.  The following year, he
went to Brazil for the International competition where he was one of the 12 winners.  He also went on a
concert tour of the whole country as part of the prize.  On his return to Baltimore, he participated and wont eh
prize of the Baltimore Music Club Music Competition for a Town Hall Debut in New York City.  In 1960, he
graduated from the Peabody with the Masters Degree in Music and the Artist Diploma.  The following year, he
went back to the Philippines for another concert tour, and another award by the University of the Philippines as
“Musician of the Year.”  The next year, he represented the Philippines at the International Piano Competition in
Paris where he won the Fourth Prize.   That was followed by the national Awards in the Philippines, namely:  
the TOYM Award by the Jaycees (1960, the Golden Cross Award, the highest Award given by the U.S.T. on its
alumni, (1968), the Dangal ng Batangas Award from the Province of Batangas (1968), the Outstanding Filipino
Overseas Award given by President Marcos, and in the U.S., the Alumni of the Year Award for Musical
Excellence (1990), Baltimore County Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community (1994).

Reyes is the only Filipino artist awarded by the University of the Philippines three different times as a Musician
of the Year (1957, 1961, 1965).  He was a faculty member of the Goucher College in Baltimore, of the Garrison
School for Girls also in Baltimore and the Peabody Conservatory of Music.  At present, he is a facult member
of the Towson State University in Towson, Maryland and a permanent Lecturer of the U.S.T. Conservatory of
Music in Manila.  Every year for the last 25 years, Reyes returns to Manila to share his expertise in music with
his countrymen.

Reyes is a member of the Katipunan Association in Baltimore, the Knights of Columbus, Baltimore, the
Baltimore Music Club, the National Music Teachers Association.  He has a yearly concert for the children of
Baltimore City and the surrounding counties of Baltimore, Hartford, Anne Arundel.  Six times a year, he spends
time at different schools of these counties playing classical music and conversing with the students.  As a
member of the resident trio, the Baltimore Trio,  he also gives six different concerts at different high schools in
the State of Maryland.

He has given concerts in Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Macau, Hong Kong, Canada, Brazil, Hungary, England,
Germany, Holland, France, Italy and Switzeland.  He likes baseball, swimming, hiking, Greek fold dancing and
above all, languages of which he speaks 8 different ones, namely, Filipino, English, French, Spanish, Italian,
Greek, German, and Portuguese.  He studied Persian, Arabic, Chinese, and spoke Japanese as a child. #
