Bob Medina Wheeling, West Virginia A Highly Respected Community Stalwart Consistent in Leadership
|
"Mr. Republican" is his nickname among the Filipinos and the
mainstream communities because of his loyalty to GOP. His
relationship with the Republican bigwigs in the region is on a first
name basis. The Mayor of San Diego, Susan Golding, and the two
most influential U.S. Congressmen from the region: Duke
Cunningham and Duncan Hunter are good friends of Bob. Unlike
many assistants to a congressmen, Bob utilized his connections
to assist Filipino compatriots rather than just himself. In his
tenure as Special Assistant to U.S. Congressman Duncan
Hunter, he parlayed his contacts at the Nation's Capital and
befriended many congressmen from both the Democrats and
Republicans. The result was employment of other Filipinos
which could never have been possible had Bob thought of himself
only.
Long before his retirement from the U.S. Navy as a submariner in
1973, he had been volunteering to the Filipino-American
community his services either as a leader or follower. He is truly
a "low profile" role model and an inspiration to the Filipino
community, especially the youth in and around the vast area of
San Diego county.Nelly.

Roberto C. Medina hails from General Trias, Cavite. Popularly called "Bob" by close friends and associates,
he is the third of the eleven children, all professionals, of the late Cavite Provincial Assessor Julian A. Medina.
Sr. and Cecilia Clamor, also of General Trias, Cavite. He is married to Teresita A. Cortez of Zamboanga City,
who bore him three daughters.
Bob's early education started in his native town of General Trias and Silang, Cavite. He was enrolled at the
Cavite High School in Cavite City, for his secondary course, when World War II broke out and he had to stop
his studies.
Around the middle of 1943 at the age of 17, he joined the guerilla movement organized in Silang, Cavite, by
one of its most respected leader, Col. Dominador Kiamzon, whose guerilla unit was under the over-all
command of Gen. Mariano T. Castaneda, a foremost guerilla fighter who later became Chief of the entire
Armed Forces of the Philippines. Although still in his teens, Bob became a First Lieutenant in their guerilla
unit, where he was made to lead a platoon of freedom fighters mostly of his age group. During the liberation
of the Philippines, Bob's guerilla unit was attached to the U.S. Army's 11th Airborne Division, that undertook
the liberation and mopping up operations in the Manila area and neighboring towns and cities, including the
upland towns of Cavite Province.
After the war, he continued his secon-dary education and graduated at the Infant Jesus Academy, where he
was named the first Corp Commander of its Preparatory Military Training (PMT) Command.
As a young high school student, he was employed at the Cavite Provincial Treasurer's Office, and to make up
for lost time brought about by the war, he enrolled at the University of the East where as a working student he
graduated in 1952 with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In 1953, he resigned
his government position, and pursued a career in the United States Navy. While undergoing basic training at
boot camp, he received the Recruit Company Honor Man's Award, the first Filipino to receive this award
while undergoing training. His naval career was spent mostly on board submarines. In one of his submarine
assignments, they did a significant submerged transit under the Polar Ice in 1958 and this particular naval
experiment led to the development of nuclear submarines. He participated in the Korean and Vietnam
campaigns. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service, with the rank of Chief yeoman, Petty
Officer, "Submarine Qualified".
In 1973, soon after his retirement from the naval service, he established a travel agency in San Diego, and in
just a year of operation, he bagged the prestigious "Travel Agent of 1974" award given to him by the
TRAVELAGE WEST Magazine.
Though retired and busy with his travel agency, but fully aware of the importance of higher education, he
enrolled at the National University of San Diego, California and finished a Master's Degree in business
Administration in 1977.
At about that year, the Filipino community in San Diego felt the urgent need to be politically involved in
government affairs, so he helped organize the Filipino-American Democrats as well as the Republican Club.
He stayed with the Republicans, and subsequently, held the position of Chairman for two terms. In 1978, he
helped organize the Filipino-American Republican Council of California, where he held the position of Public
Relations Officer for two terms. In 1979 he joined the staff of Congressman Duncan Hunter until June of 1993.
His political activities were centered in helping Republican candidates win elections for public office in San
Diego County and Southern California, mobilizing the strength of the Filipino community and developing their
politcal awareness, Bob organized the East County (San Diego) Republican Council of California, where he
held the position of Vice President. A very active member of the Republican Central Committee of San Diego,
he held the position of Chairman of the party's Outreach Program in 1982.
After serving the Federal Government for more than 34 years, he is now the Regional Manager of MASTER
GUARD of Dallas, Texas. A golf afficionado, he also missed the days when he used to be active in playing
tennis, and basketball.#
