Juliet L. So-Bosita Strongsville, Ohio A Community Leader Ahead of Her Time
|
In a world where about 600 million women are illiterate; where
one is practically locked-out of the power structure if you are
illiterate in a literate society; where sometimes even exceptionally
educated women find it difficult to excel in professions
predominantly dominated by men; where perhaps gender and
radial reasons, women often suffer setbacks in their quest for
professional promotion and/or recognition; Dr. Juliet So-Bosita, a
physician, obstetrician and gynecologist, a working wife and
mother, is very much ahead of her time.
Juliet graduated with a B. S. of Science from the University of the
Philippines in 1959 and obtained her degree in Medicine from the
same institution in 1963. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi,
an honor society. After passing the ECFMG in the 1960’s, she
came to the United States and did her internship at Mercy Hospital
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1963-64. She had first year
residency in Obstretrics and Gynecology from 1964-65 at
Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, New York, after which
she proceeded to finish her residency at Cleveland Metropolitan
General Hospital from 1965-1968. She was the Chief resident at
Metro in her last year of residency.

She was appointed a Cancer Fellow and Special Resident in Cytology-Oncology at Cleveland Metropolitan
General from 07/01/68 through 06/30/69, and then a Tumor Fellow from 1969-1970.
Juliet obtained here Medical Licen-sure from Washington, D.C. and the State of Ohio, but she preferred to
stay in Ohio where she has been in very active practice in OB & Gyn from 1970 to date. She is Certified by the
American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
To know her, is to like her. That is the kind of personality Juliet has, she is not the type who will have an
instantaneous smile at a stranger, probably because of her strong religious background, and cultural
upbringing, but she is a very caring, gentle, unpretentious though sensitive human being. She finds great
pleasure in hardwork, detailed and thorough in her caring attention to her patients, but above all, she has
compassing for their feelings. No words are really adequate to describe Juliet as a physician, obstetrician
and Gynecologist, because as far as the author is concerned, there is no other one like her. Her professional
relationships were always of the highest quality; very energetic and dedicated woman, yet she has time for
friends and family. In any social gathering, Juliet’s personality stands out, not only because of her quiet
elegance, but because she is also almost everyone’s “NINANG” in the Philippine-American community.
In her recent speech at the graduation celebration of her son and daughter-in-law from Medicine, she said
that she doesn’t believe she is a good mother, because she couldn’t devote full time with her children, Ray
and Judilin as they were growing up, but in this day and age, a working mother provides a great role model for
her children. In the words of her husband, Dr. Rene Bosita, also a Board certified physician-anesthesiologist,
“My wife is a very loving person, excellent wife and mother. She is always there for me and our children
whenever you needed her, and not only to our family, but to other people, she is also very warm and friendly.
Over the years, she had become accustomed to giving that she seemed to have forgotten how to take.”
Yes, Juliet is a very generous woman, not only to individual people, but to her church and institutions like St.
Ignatius High School where her son graduated from her daughter’s elementary school, the Incarnate Word
Academy, and at present, the Magnificat High school.
Her capability as a leader has long been known in the community for she is a tireless and enthusiastic worker
with an intense commitment to her high ideals. It was a teacher in Medicine that her energy, intelligence and
generous effort produced its greatest impact on the youthful resident obstetricians who came to know her. In
1980, when the author was the President of the Association of Philippine Physicians in Ohio, she organized
the very first medical and surgical mission to San Fernando, La Union along with another dynamic woman
leader and former President of APPO, Dr. Rosalinda de Jesus. That was the very first medical mission to the
Philippines by any Philippine medical organization in America. Juliet, as a leader was demanding and
persevering, yet warm and loyal. She demands action in all community projects she is involved with. She
makes sure that all projects are important and each one, she gives them her seemingly undivided attention.
Many nights, the Bosita home in Strongsville, Ohio has been a place for lively discussions and emergency
meetings. This is held in all kinds of weathers, be it summer, winter, Spring or Fall. This is why every
undertaking she chaired and organized have all been very successful.

Yes, sometimes it seems Juliet is everywhere at once. You see her at work, making sure she is giving her
best attention to all her cases and she does relate very well with all her patients. You see her at all the social
events, making sure that all cultural, social and civic undertakings are planned well. You see her in the
Philippines, making sure she gives back to her country. And you see her with her family, making sure she
instills the same values in her children that she exemplifies so well in her life.
Excelling in any one of these areas would be enough to make her a positive role model and a treasure for any
community. But for her excel in all of them, makes her truly outstanding. And to give her this honor, as one of
twenty outstanding Filipino-Americans, after all she has accomplished in life, for her family, for her community
and for her country, seems not only fitting, but very much long overdue.
CONGRATULATIONS, Juliet, for this much deserved recognition!
