Outstanding and Pioneering Community Leader
Dr. Raymundo  Magno's leadership and dedication to community
service spans more than three and half decades.  In 1964 he
organized the Maryland Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity of the UP College
of Medicine to raise funds for the College.  In 1969, he became
the founding president of the KATIPUNAN, Fil-American
Association of Maryland, an organization which up to now is the
most successful Filipino-American association in the Baltimore
area.  As president he initiated cultural presentations to the
Maryland community, culminated by the declaration of the
Governor of Maryland designating the second week of June as
Filipino-American Friendship Week.  Katipunan's charitable
endeavors includes funds for disasters not only in the Philippines
but other countries as well.  Scholarship funds were established.  
Tagalog classes, Filipino cooking lessons, baby sitting corps
were initiated.

Believing  in  the health of the body and the spirit as well, he
organized the Philippine Golf Association of Maryland, (PGA) and
became a chartered member of the Santo Nino Council, an all
Filipino council of the Knight of Columbus.  The PGA not only attracted many Filipino golfers engrossed with
the game but it also raises funds for charity. Professionally,   Ray  is  in   private practice doing general internal
medicine, having trained at Johns Hopkins, among other places.  He is a teaching consultant, making rounds
with residents at the Franklin Square Hospital Residency Training in Internal Medicine.  He was a delegate of
the Baltimore City Medical Society to the State Society and became members of numerous committees
including the Peer Review and Legislative committees.  As a member of the Legislative committee, he fought
for the right of the Foreign Medical graduates to have equal access to the State Licensure.

Ray has been a past president of the Association of the Philippine Physicians of Maryland (APPM) and a
delegate to the national APPA.  He is the current president of the UPAA of Maryland and a Board member of
the UPMASA,  As president of the APPM he raised $10,000 to contribute to the Maryland Medical Society's
building fund.

In 1995, he joined a medical mission to the Nueva Ecija, was so touched by the thousands of indigent
patients seen that he is again helping raise funds for another mission.

His  main passion  is  to help the Filipinos help themselves.  He is the current president of the Foundation For
Aid to the Philippines, Inc. (FAPI) the vision of which is to help Filipinos escape from the shackles of poverty.  
The concept is to fund poverty stricken communities to develop micro industries like "sari-sari" stores, hog
raising, farming, etc.   To make it a reality, Ray has initiated many fund raising activities, including the yearly
raffle distributed to Filipinos across the US and Dinner Fund Raising for the Baltimore community.  To date
more close to $200,000.00 have been raised and thousands of indigent families have benefited.

Awards - he has received many.  Leadership awards from all the organizations that he has become president,
including the APPM and the Katipunan.  Appreciation awards from many committees from hospitals and the
state medical society.  For community service, in 1987 he was the outstanding UP alumnus awardee by the
University Alumni Association of America.  He was also awarded outstanding alumnus award for community
service by Class 60, College of Medicine, University of the Philippines.  Ray is the first Filipino to be awarded
by the Baltimore County Minority Council for leadership and community service in 1992.

According to Ray his most satisfying award came from President Ramos, when FAPI, with Ray as its
president, received the Kaakabay ng Bayan  Award.  FAPI  was one of only two Filipino-American organizations
in the world receiving that award that year.

Above  is   a  brief  summary of  Ray Magno's leadership and community involvement.  His impact on the
community, especially among the Filipinos of Maryland is immense, to say the least.

As president of the APPM, as VP for Development of the FAPI, and mutual members of many organizations, I
have known and worked with Ray for many Years.
