|
“I am a Filipino. I am not a Tagalog, Visayan, Mindanao, Ilocano,
Bicolano. I am a Filipino,” declared Dr. Benjamin “Ben” Paz
Ocampo in his letter of declaration of candidacy when he
successfully ran for the position of one of the Board of Directors of
the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA) in
1994. Born and raised in Taytay, Rizal, which is now part of metro
Manila, Ben has the trait of a true-blooded Filipino. He is friendly,
courteous and generous to all, may it be in the medical field or
in social gatherings of Filipinos in the State of Florida. He greets
his kababayans in Tagalog. His ways typifies a true “laking
Maynila.” His father is Posidio E. Ocampo, Sr., and his mother is
Rosario Paz, both pure Tagalog from Taytay, Rizal.
His basic education were all acquired in Manila. He graduated
from the University of the Philippines High School; his B.S. in
Liberal Arts from Far Eastern University; and his Doctor of
Medicine degree from MCU School of Medicine. In November
1970, he came to the United States for further medical education.

Ben is a university trained psychiatrist presently in private practice at Kissimmee, Florida, specializing in Adult
and Geriatric Psychiatry. He was in private family-medical-practice in West Virginia for seven years before
enrolling at Wright State University, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry in Dayton, Ohio, where he
received his Psychiatry Degree in 1985. He trained for six months at Green Memorial Hospital in Xenia, Ohio
with the Drug and Alcohol Unit and had his residency at the Ohio Mental Health in Dayton.
Relocating in Punta Gorda, Florida after graduation, Ben worked with patients in the drug and alcohol
programs at the Medical Center Hospital with Glenbeigh Hospital, the Charter Hospital Orlando South C.D.
Unit. After a private practice in psychiatry in Charlotte County, Florida, Ben settled in Kissimmee, Florida in
the fall of 1987 to devote full time in his private practice in Psychiatry.
Inspite of his full schedule, Ben finds time in helping his peers in the medical field, and more especially
among the Filipinos in the region. Active in the community, he was recently elected as President of the
Filipino American Club in Pinellas County, Florida, and President of the Philippine Medical Association of
Central Florida from 1994 to 1996. On top of his leadership in the community, he also participates with
various projects and functions of the America Medical Association; the American Psychiatric Association; the
American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry; and the New York University/Bellevue Psychiatry.
A Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management, one of the most prestigious accolades one
can attain in the medical field, Ben’s academic credentials are very impressive and an enviable attainment in
his field of endeavor. He is the Medical Director- Senior Adult of Geriatric and Support Department of Charter
Hospital Behavioral System, Chairperson, Pharmacy-Therapeutic and D.U.E. Committee; Medical Director of
Park Place Hospital; Co-Psychiatric Medical Director of Osceola County Correctional Facility; and Co-
Chairperson of Fellowship Mental Health.
A fighter for Filipino causes who does not hesitate to speak up at any time, any place. Once, Ben was
confronted by an American psychiatrist who complained to other physicians about a foreign medical
graduate and a Filipino as the Medical Director of the Hospital, referring to Dr. Ben Ocampo. “The Corporate
people and the Board of Trustees of this hospital believed that I am more qualified and a better person than
you. I don’t want any more of your squabbling,” retorted Ben to the stunned physician. Looking him straight in
the eye, Ben continued, “True, I am a Filipino and I am very proud to be one!” From that moment on, the
whining doctor showed his respect and admiration to the outspoken and courageous Dr. Ben Ocampo.
Head of progressive family of registered nurses, Ben is married to the former Urcena Asinas Echavaria, a
registered nurse from Pakil, Laguna. Ben Ocampo’s clan includes: son Nelson, a registered nurse;
daughter Cheryl, also a registered nurse; son Benjamin II, a student; ; son-in-law Tirso Ignacio, DDM;
daughter-in-law Grace Martinez Ocampo, also a registered nurse.
Psalm 23:6 is Ben’s favorite verse: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Ben’s outstanding achievements both locally and nationally,
have been consistent with his favorite verse. Goodness and mercy are his very visible virtues. #
