McKing Alanis was born in Iriga City, Philippines. He attended
high school at St. Anthony Academy. Subsequently attended
Ateneo de Naga and San Beda College. Like his brothers, while
going to school, he was a musician, and a self-supporting
student. McKing, along with his brothers, Eddie and Jimmy, they
were the "inseparable brothers”, who worked as radio
broadcasters.
On December 1, 1961, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy at Sangley
Point, Cavite, Philippines. Alanis graduated as an Outstanding
Recruit from boot camp training. He was initially assigned as a
Flag allowance steward. He subsequently became a proud
American and laterally converted to graphics specialist rating. He
graduated with honors at the Army Engineer, Reproduction and
Graphics School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Senior Chief Alanis

faithfully served for more than 28 years in the Navy. His professional military experience included in-depth
experience in mess management, gourmet-culinary, graphics reproduction, photography, telemedia,
personnel management, religious administration, public relations, protocol, overseas diplomacy, safety,
morale and welfare. While assigned in isolated Kodiak, Alaska from 1966-72, at his off time, he worked as a
musician, and evening newscaster in AFRTS-TV, Kodiak.
Subsequent assignments included: Naval Training Center, San Diego; Chief Naval Intelligence, Washington,
D.C. Commander Amphibious Group Three, San Diego; Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Meridian, Mississippi;
naval Station, Kodiak, Alaska (2 tours); Commander Seventeenth Naval District, Kodiak, Alaska; U.S. Army
Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Commander Atlantic Fleet, Plan Intelligence, Norfolk, Virginia; USS
Sperry (AS-12); USS Acadia AD-42 (2 tours); Transient Personnel Unit, San Diego; Personnel Support Activity,
Naval Training Center, San Diego. During these tours he was offered the following additional assignments;
Overseas Diplomacy and Protocol Officer, Command Lay Eucharist Minister, Senior Chief of the Command,
Career Counselor, Leadership Management Training Instructor, Drug Alcohol Program Advisor , Morale
Welfare Officer, Division Production Officer, Division Officer, Command Safety Officer and Manager for
Defense, Real Time Automated Personnel Identification System.
His military awards include: Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medal; Good Conduct Medal ( 6
awards); National Defense Service Medal; Battle "E” Ribbons (3 awards); Sea Service Deployment Ribbon
with 1 Bronze Star; Navy Unit Commendation, Expert Pistol and Expert Rifle. Additionally, this Senior Chief
earned a total of twenty-one letter of commendations for superlative track record.
Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1990, McKing joined the staff of congressman Randy “Duke”
Cunningham of the 51st Congressional District. He now serves as a Community Liaison and inquiry
assistant. McKing Alanis is the Congressman’s right-hand man assisting him in constituents service dealing
with the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Justice, Immigration and
Naturalization Service and other Pan-Asian affairs. Most notably, McKing is directly involved in the
administration of academy appointments for tomorrow’s future military leaders’ nomination to the military
Academies.
McKing Alanis’ military and civic service awards include: “Outstanding Recruit”, Naval Training Center, San
Diego, 1962; Volunteer and Community Service, Commander, 17th Naval District, Kodiak Alaska 1969; Official
Bicentennial Recognition Award, Mayor Irvine Hill of Norfolk, Virginia, 1975; Community Service Award,
Submarine Officers Wives Club, San Diego, 1978; “Outstanding Leadership Award”, Chamber of Commerce,
San Diego, 1978; Recognition for Outstanding Sailor of the Year”, Commander, Submarine Squadron Three,
San Diego, 1979; Congressional Staff, Recognition for Outstanding Service, United States Naval Academy,
1994; “VIP Awardee in Political Affairs”, Maria Clara De Pilipinas Sorority, San Diego, California, 1995.
McKing is married to the former Azucena Gonzaga Salcedo. They have three children, Liza, married to
Christopher Starr Williams, Grace, married to David Sullivan, and Johnniter-Jamie. McKing and Susie are
proud grandparents of their grandsons Christopher and Jared. They reside in San Diego.
