Rose Daria Virginia Beach, Virginia Community Leader - Grand Dame of Beauty Queens
|
There is practically no one who can match the record of Rose
Daria when it comes to queen-making. You have heard of
king-makers, but Rose is the Grand Dame of beauty pageants in
and around the Virginia Beach area. Actively involved and in the
forefront of Filipino community organizations in the
Norfolk-Virginia Beach scenes, Filipino beauty pageant is not
complete without Rose Daria assisting or directing the event.
For almost two decades, Rose has perfected the selection
process, pageant presentation, ticket or ballot selling, convincing
parents to allow daughter to compete in beauty and talent search,
and the nuts and bolts of either "Little Miss Philippines," Miss
Teenage Philippines," Miss Philippines," or, "Mrs. Philippines."
The latest extravaganza gala beauty pageant spearheaded by
Rose Daria - from stage presentation to choreographing the

event to dressing up the "beauties," was the 13th Annual National Miss Philippine America Pageant 1997,
held in picturesque Virginia Beach, Virginia last August 23 - 24, 1997. With Rose as the Artistic Director,
she successfully pooled the various talents of the Asian countries in the Hampton Roads area to
participate in what was later regarded as one of the best presentations so far of the past 13 years
pageant. China, Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Korea, India, Vietnam and the Philippines, all
presented cultural numbers as part of the program.
The pageant's theme this year: The Philippines & Her Asian Neighbors" was again held at Convention
Center of Virginia Beach. Annually a contingent of Filipino Midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy in
Annapolis, Virginia, escort the young Filipina beauties representing various regions in the United States and
Canada where Filipinos reside. Rose Daria, with able assistance from various committees, monitored and
coordinated the successful pageant which annually has been attracting participants and on-lookers from
various areas of North America.
"What Rose Daria has been doing to highlight Filipino image in the region is very commendable," commented
Dr. Charito "Rose" Hipol of Virginia Beach. "She has been instrumental in developing confidence among
our young people to participate in beauty pageants. Through this beauty pageant experience,
self-confidence is subtly taught and developed among the young."
Rose's life is filled with many achievements. She was born, raised and educated in Manila, finishing high
school from St. Scholastica College. Upon graduation, her parents steered her towards a profession of
healing arts, which led to a five-year nursing program from Manila's Far Eastern University (FEU).
Immediately after passing the Philippine Nursing Board examinations, she applied and was accepted by the
University of Illinois graduate program for nursing, where she concentrated on surgical nursing. Although
Rose's graduate studies were in the medical surgical field, she has been practicing psychiatric nurse
specialist for numerous years. She is currently employed by the First Hospital Corporation, Managed Care
Program, as a case manager for the Campus Project.
In her personal life, it was during one of her school functions while in graduate school that she met George,
originally from Zambales. They eventually married and have been married for 31 years. They are blessed
with two children, John and Wendy. Both are college graduates and have successful careers. Their son,
John, is married to Daria Zane, and they live in Bethesda, Maryland. Their daughter, Wendy, is married to
Eric Cole, and reside in Durham, North Carolina.
In addition to her personal family achievements, Rose has also successfully led many community
endeavors. She is founding parishioner of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where
she serves as a parish consultant, a small community pastor, a bible study facilitator, and a mass
coordinator. She is also active in Pastoral Care Ministry for Homeless program. Her spiritual commitment
is a priority in her life and her dedication is evidenced through her involvement in these ministries.
Her civic involvement encompasses a wide range of organizations that support Filipino-American community
in the Hampton Roads area, as the region is called. Rose co-founded the Philippine Nurses Association of
Hampton Roads at her own home. She has served as president and is currently member of the board of
directors of the Filipino Women's Club of Tidewater, the oldest Filipino organization in the United States,
having been founded in 1964. Rose is Cultural Director of the Council of United Filipino Organizations of
Tidewater. She has been consulted as an artistic director for almost all of the Filipino beauty pageants in
the Hampton area.
Rose's tireless dedication to her career, family and community demonstrates that she is a positive image
for the Filipino. #
