Born  in the buzzing and busy City of  Angeles,  Pampanga,
Philippines,  Dr.  Enrique “Rick”  Yambao Galura    acquired his  
medical  degree in 1968 from the oldest university in the Far East,  
the famous University of  Santo Tomas. Successfully  passing the
difficult  ECFMG  examinations  given  by  the U.S. Embassy  in
Manila, a  rigid  and  hard to hurdle  examinations   for  foreign  
medical  graduates  desiring  to come to the United States.  Dr.
Galura decided  to  come to the United States in 1974  with the
only  goal of:   “To continue and  complete  my   Psychiatric  
Residency  as well as to pursue  studies  on  the latest,  modern  
and  high  technology  trainings  in  my  chosen medical field,”
related  Dr. Galura.   

In four years (1974-78)  he completed  his  Residency  at  the
University of  Miami,  and  at  Jackson  Memorial  Hospital of  
Miami.   From 1978  to 1981, he  served as  Chief of  Psychiatry  
Department of the Medical  Corps  of  the  United States   Air Force  stationed  in Kadena,  Japan. In  1981, he  
was an associate in a  private practice and  at the same time,  the  Medical   Director  of  Center  for  Individual  
and  Family  Services  in  Mansfield,  Ohio.  In  1986, he  started  his  full  time solo private practice in General  
Psychiatry in the sunshine state of Florida.

He is   currently  the  president  of the Philippine Medical Society of Florida (PMS), the most influential and
powerful Filipino organization in the state.  However,  despite his  busy daily  schedule, Rick,  as  he wants
friends to call him, is  deeply  involved with the activities of the Filipino communities  as well as with  the
various professional organizations  he is affiliated with.  As  president of PMS, he organizes,  coordinates  
and  monitors  various    humanitarian  projects,   more specially the medical missions   sponsored  by  PMS  
to  the unfortunate brethren   of  remote and poor barrios in the Philippines who otherwise cannot afford
medical attention.  His  active participation with the various Filipino - American organizations  in the state  is  
worthy  of  praises. Community leaders  report  that  Dr. Galura  never refuses when approach to  either  
spearhead  and/or   financially  contribute to worthy  causes.

Dr. Benjamin Paz Ocampo, TOFA ‘97 and  a key  leader in Florida who highly  recommended Dr. Rick Galura
to be a  TOFA Awardee,  describes Dr. Galura: “A  big  asset  to the Filipino community in general, and to the
medical profession in particular.  He is tireless, dependable  and  constantly doing  something  good  for
others.”

In addition to his successful private practice,  Rick  is the Medical  Director  of  Emergency  Room and  
Consultative  Psychiatric  Services  of  Helen  Ellis  Memorial  Hospital.  He provides individual therapy and
medication management  for  outpatients and inpatients of the busy hospital. He is also the   Medical  Advisor  
for  House call House  Healthcare;  Medical Director  for  ECT Services  for  Charter Hospital of  Pasco Lutz,
Florida;  Chief of Psychiatry  for Community  Hospital in New Port Richey, Florida;  and  the  Service  Medical
Director for Charter  Counselling Center  of  West  Pasco in Holiday,  Florida.

Despite  his  busy schedule,  Dr. Galura finds time to enjoy riding his motorcycle and listening to his favorite
music.  His  charming wife is  the former  Virginia  Ines  of Ilocos  Province. They have two young adult
children:  Ana (28) and Leo (26).#
