Dr. Teresita Bobila-Brillantes epitomizes a typical and traditional
Filipina. Refined, beautiful and charming that can easily disarm
one with her sincere smiles, However, Tessie or Chit, as friends
fondly call her, is a no nonsense “can do” Filipino community
national leader. Active in several nationwide organizations, Chit,
enjoys serving any position she was elected to hold. “She’s full of
ideas and energy. Tireless in making detailed preparations of any
assigned tasks given her, Chit always works to the fullest of her
potentials,” remarked one of the Filipino community leaders in
the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Among the various national organizations that Chit is affiliated
with is the UST Medicine ‘67 Foundation USA where she was the
founding president. With the powerful Philippine American
Medical Society of New Jersey, she served as secretary, vice
president and president of the society. To give back something
tangible to the Philippines, since 1987 she organized,
monitored and coordinated medical missions to the remote
areas of the provinces of Cavite, Ilocos, and Abra. A life member

with the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA) , Tessie served an active member of the
House of Delegates and the Board of Governors “Her abilities to organize and motivate others are visible in
the various projects she spearheaded,” added other regional Filipino leaders.
When she was selected as the Grand Marshal of the Philippine Independence Day Parade at Jersey City,
New Jersey, in May of 1996, she was successful in rallying the Filipino community to participate in what old-
timers of the Jersey City as tone of the biggest gathering of Filipino-Americans in the area.
A high school graduate from Santa Catalina College of Manila. In 1967, she attained her medical degree
from Asia’s foremost medical school, Santo Tomas University. Tessie has the rare distinctions of
belonging to various prestigious medical professional societies. She is a Diplomate, American Board of
Family Practice; Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine; Diplomate, American Board of Quality
Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
Notwithstanding her hectic and heavy schedule, Tessie always make time to serve the Filipino-American
communities in the Tri-State. Her presence is constantly solicited by the community organizations either to
lend her expertise and experience or to ask her to lead the community. “And, Dr. Teresita “Tessie” Bobila-
Brillantes never disappoint the community. She spends her own funds and devotes countless hours which
are very valuable in her medical practice.
The annual fund-raising of St. James Hospital of New Jersey which sponsors the successful annual dinner-
dance receptions has been Tessie’s other way of giving back to the mainstream community. In 1996-97,
she served as co-chairperson, and for the year 1997-98, she single-handedly served as the chairperson.
“A woman is like tea. She grows stronger in hot water,” is aptly Tessie’s favorite quotation. Indeed, she
becomes tougher when the situation is tough. Cool and calculating in making major decisions in either her
profession as a physician or as a community leader.
Tessie has three children: Rosanna, 29; Gerard, 27; and Meliza, 25. They reside in fashionable Short Hills in
New Jersey. #
