Nationally Recognized Dynamic & Outstanding Medical Surgeon
Filipinos who are  fortunate to spend vacation or travel  to  the
exotic Virgin Islands, a territorial property  of the United States,
and  a  world-famous vacation  spot,  are pleasantly surprised  to
learn  that a Filipino is one of the islands’  outstanding and
dynamic  citizens.  Jose “Pepito” Ferrer Poblete, class  of 1956
graduate from the College of Medicine,  University of the
Philippines,  settled in Virgin Islands in 1963 after he married
one of most beautiful maidens in the islands, former  “Miss U.S.
Virgin Islands,”  Juanita Monell of  St. Croix.

“Pepito,” fondly addressed by his relatives and friends  served
as  the Virgin Islands Commissioner of  Health,  a  prestigious
islands  government  post he held until his recent retirement just
last January 1999. In  1993, a resolution number 1503  of the 20th
Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands was passed on behalf of Dr.
Jose F. Poblete in “recognition of his many years of service to the
people of the Virgin Islands.”

The highest accolade among  physicians is to be named as
“Physician of the Year”  by  your  fellow physicians.    In 1993 he
was awarded the  “Physician of the Year”  award  by  his   peers
from the Virgin Islands Medical Society  “for  his outstanding
services to the people of the islands.”   From  1963  when  he first  was  employed as the  attending surgeon
at  the   Charles  Harwood  Memorial Hospital in St. Croix, U. S.V. I.   His  ascent at Charles Harwood Memorial
Hospital was achieved through dedication and hard work. From the position of  attending surgeon, Pepito in
1969 was  appointed as assistant chief  of  surgery, and in 1980, he attained the most prestigious
achievement in the field of surgery when  he was  named  Chief of Surgery  at   Charles  Harwood  Memorial
Hospital. In 1982, he was concurrently  named Chief of  Surgery at  St. Croix Hospital of the United States
Virgin Islands.  With  his medical expertise in surgery now  being acknowledged  as  an  outstanding
achievement,  Pepito’s services were greatly in demand. He was named as member of the Virgin Islands
Kidney Transplant Team and Coordinator of the V.I. Chemotherapy Program, Staff Surgeon of the Modular
Hospital in St. Croix, member of the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, Medical Director of the Hess Oil Virgin Islands
Corporation in  St. Croix, U.S.V.I.  Inevitably,  because of his successful private practice and nationally-
recognized skill as medical surgeon, the government of United States Virgin Islands appointed Dr. Jose
“Pepito” Ferrer Poblete as its  Commissioner of  Health,  a  position attainable only based on one’s
exceptional ability as a physician.

Immediately after he acquired his medical degree from the University of the Philippines, Pepito came to the
United States to pursue higher medical education and to learn the latest medical techniques.  He started his
Rotating Internship at St. Clare’s Hospital at Schenectady,  New York,  and  later  was Assistant Resident in
General Surgery at Sydenham Hospital in New York . From 1959 to 1962, he was Chief Resident in Surgery at
Sydenham, New York  City. Then from 1960 to 1861, he was Resident in Surgery (Oncology)  at  Sloan

Pepito is married to the former Miss U.S. Virgin Islands, Juanita Monell of  St. Croix.  Blessed  with three
equally beautiful daughters as Mrs. Poblete, Pepito and Juanita spend  their “ retirement” years  visiting their
daughters: Aurora  “Rory”  (34) married to Mark Ficucane living in Freeport, Bahamas, West Indies; Marizelle,
28, an associate attorney at a law firm in South Florida; and Maria “Maribelle,”  25,  a registered nurse at Sibley
Hospital in Washington, D.C.

He was born  in  Manila, Philippines  on  March 29, 1933, to the late Dr. Vicente P. Poblete and Mrs. Aurora
Ferrer Poblete, a native of Naic, Cavite and General Trias, Cavite, respectively.  The  eldest  son  of seven
children:  four  brothers who are all physicians, a  sister also a physician, two other sisters both pharmacists,
