Edna Dimaano Gan
Baltimore,  Maryland
Tireless,  Valuable and Dependable Spearheader of Projects
Eastern Survey Bureau and the Fil-Am Council in Baltimore report
a 96% approval rating for Edna Dimaano Gan's  nomination to the
"Twenty Outstanding Filipino Amercans" in North America and
Canada.

Indeed,  the presentation of Edna Dimaano Gan witha Twenty
Outstanding Filipino-American (TOFA) award is a well-deserved
recognition, for Edna has been one of the most liked, valuable
and dependable members of the Fil-Am community in Baltimore.
Although she has not accepted any nomination, request, or
coercion to become president in any organizatiion, she has taken
many invaluable leadership roles as social VP for the Katipunan,
she coordinated a very successful inauguration and debutante's
ball, and the yearly Filipino festivals commemorating the
Philippine Independence Day as the overall chairperson. She has
organized many social activities with the senior citizens group,
which she originally organized with Tita Pintoy Kenny and Jovina
Baino. Her long time leadership is very effective- with Edna in the
helm, we can always expect a well-organized and very successful
affair.

For as long as one can remember, Edna's column in the
Katipunan Record, "Samot-samot" has helped the community in many ways. She listens to what is available
and what is needed by the community and makes people aware of resources and answers to their needs.
Her warm personality and kind heart has benefited so many people from all walks of life. You are new in
Baltimore and you need a job, a chance meeting with Edna in a bus or train and before the week is over, she
has scheduled an appointment or you to be interviewed with someone she knows in need of an office worker.
You meet her in a social gathering and you talk about what you are doing, before you know it, someone is
calling you who is interested in what you are doing. Her networking ability is wonderful and credible.

Her work with the youth is very special. She helped organized social events for the first Filipino Students
Association at John Hopkins University. She continues to support many youth activities in the community. She
was active in the PTA and was an officer of the residents' community association. In her workplace, in the
Laboratories Administration of the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, she was
appointed a team member of the "On the Spot" Employee Recognition Project, which is a Quality Council
project to improve the department's services, operations and work environment.

For her many contributions to the community, Edna was awarded a 1999 Humanitarian and Community
Service Award by the Baltimore County Minority Advisory Council. The award is a commendation for her "as an
outstanding representative of the Filipino Community who has dedicated herself to the promotion of human
welfare and the advancement of social reforms in helping to make her community a better place in which to
live and work."

In her youth in the Philippines, Edna was involved with the less fortunate members of the community. She
visited  and counseled inmates in a jail as  member of the Legion of Mary in Cubao. She visited many
squatter communities and encouraged couples in communal law relatonships to get married in church and
advised them  how to live a Christian life.

In 1963, she finished a degree in B.S. Industrial Pharmacy from the University of the Philippines and passed
the board (4th place). She worked at the Board of  Industries for a year before she came to Baltimore. She
worked at St. Joseph's Hospital, Franklin Square Hospital and John Hopkins Hospital.

Edna eventually got married to Dr. Juan Gan, an equally wonderful, caring, and excellent human being. They
have four children- Cristine, who graduated at Loyola College with a degree in sciences and fine arts (cum
laude) and is now married to a physician, Dr. Charles Cooper with whom they are raising intelligent and fine
little boys; Regina has a degree in mathematics and biology from Goucher College and is now a resident
physician at Franklin Square Hospital and is married to Russell Garden; Dina, a cum laude graduate at
Johns Hopkins University with a major in Philosophy and the Writing Seminars; and Juan Jr. (Nito) who
finished with a degree in Microbiology at the University of Maryland and is now in his 3rd year in medical
school.

Edna, currently working at the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and Jon, a surgeon
at Good Samaritan Hospital, are still practicing their professions and are active in community activities. They
are also enjoying their life with their grandchildren, Mitch, Max and Mason.

Edna, your family and friends and the community are blessed by your presence and your kind deeds. May God
bless you always.#
