Nestor "Nesty" M. Sabundayo Baltimore, Maryland A Dedicated and Tireless Community Leader
|
"You gathered us to discuss and led us to decide by consensus.
You motivated us by diplomacy to embrace the project and kept us
moving and focused on the object. You made us better. You
showed us how to ride the groundswell. Thank you, Nestor. You led
us with mind and labor by example"... The Katipunan Officers and
Directors, 1998-2000. (Presented to Nestor Sabundayo at the
Anniversary Ball).
His prestigious and well paying job as Vice President and Division
Manager of Corporate Banking of a commercial bank in Manila and
concurrently as Chief Operating Officer of a venture capital company
at a young age did not deter him from shifting into a new paradigm
and pursue other opportunities elsewhere. He recalled with a
sparkle in his eyes that when he was appointed to manage the
bank's largest branch in the Metro Manila area he was only 26 years
old. When asked why he left a successful career and took the risk to
start all over again in a new country, he said "most people live and
die with their music unplayed. They never dare to try. Sometimes,
you have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down."
When pressed if he is happy or if regrets permeate his mind for
making the bold move, he countered " the happiest people don't
necessarily have the best of everything; they just make

the most of everything that comes along the way." This is a truism that Nestor has lived by ever since he
migrated to this country in 1984. It is transparent from his persona that this dictum is ingrained into his
lifestyle.
At present, Nestor has a busy financial service and advisory practice in Baltimore, Maryland. He is licensed
to do business in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania and West Virginia. His clients include
the very successful Filipino-Americans and other Asian-Americans. He takes pride in providing excellent and
professional service to his clients. His business philosophy is very simple:" My client's interest is supreme. It
is above my personal and company's interests". He continues to attend formal training classes and
professional seminars to keep him abreast with the changes in tax laws and investment issues. Nestor is a
holder of a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration degree (majoring in Accounting and Finance)
from the University of the East and obtained a Masters in Management degree from the Asian Institute of
Management.
Nestor's strong suit is the leadership he provides to the Filipino-American community in Maryland. Currently,
he is the Chairperson and President of Baltimore County Minority Advisory Council whose memberships
include community leaders from different ethnic communities. This Council provides counsel to the County
Executive of Baltimore on issues affecting the various ethnic communities. The Filipino-American community
in Baltimore also tapped Nestor's leadership in 1998 when he was elected President of Katipunan, the
largest Filipino-American association in Maryland. His leadership abilities have been put to test when he
spearheaded a yearlong presentation to celebrate the "Millenium." He did not fail them It was a resounding
success! Not only was it dubbed as the "best organized" event; it was also the largest gathering ever of the
members of the community. Capitalizing from his extensive exposure in the business word and Corporate
America, he introduced a fresh style of leadership especially on how meetings are conducted. Very business
like; venue of meetings were changed from private homes to "conference rooms"; ( to achieve this goal, he
personally lobbied with Baltimore County government for a conference room to be made available to
Katipunan); time-span of meetings were capped to a maximum of two-hour period. Adherence to protocol
was indeed the trademark when he presides over meetings. He believes that an orderly meeting is an
effective time management tool.
Nestor's leadership knows no boundaries. In 1997, he was elected Grand Knight of Sto. Nino Council of the
Knights of Columbus. He takes pride as the youngest Grand Knight of the Council ever. During his
stewardship, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus conferred to Sto. Niino Council a "Star Council
Award," the highest and most prestigious award bestowed to a council. He is Charter Member of the Council
and a Sir Knight.
Nestor and his wife are also very much committed in programs that enhance the life of our native countrymen
who are less fortunate. Both are officers of FAPI (Foundation for Aid to the Philippines, Inc.), a non-profit
organization whose primary mission is to help the "poorest of the poor" Filipinos help themselves. This is
achieved through funding of micro-livelihood projects, scholarship grants, calamity assistance and medical
missions. Nestor's position as Vice President for Project & Development and a member of the Board provide
him the opportunity to pursue his passion for charitable endeavors. In May 2002, he will travel to Manila at the
behest of FAPI to pave the way for the renewal of funding of livelihood projects.
When asked where his source of energy is drawn, without the slightest hesitation... "from my wife." Maria
Rosario Ramos Sabundayo (or Chuchi), Nestor's lovely wife is indeed a pillar of stability and strength. She is
definitely Nestor's best friend. A holder of a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition from Philippine Women's University
and a Masters Degree in Nutrition from New York University, Maria is the Deputy Director of Correctional Food
Service of the state of Maryland. As a Registered and Licence Dietician, she also provides consulting
services to various nursing home facilities.
Nestor and Maria have three (3) children: Marissa Christine (28); Edward Joseph (22) and Tiffany Marie (17).
Marissa graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts and completing
her Masters of Science Degree in Print Textile Designs in May 2002. She is a graduate of Notre Dame
Preparatory School in Towson. Edward Joseph (Jay) is a senior student at Northeastern University in Boston
completing a Bachelors of Science in Architecure degree in June 2002. He attended Loyola High School in
Blakefield. Tiffany is a Junior at Pope John XXIII in Boston.
The youngest of six (6) siblings, Nestor was born and raised in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. His parents: Pedro S.
Sabundayo and Maria Puzon Marcos (both deceased) were career teachers/administrators in the Public
School System. Nestor's siblings include a Regional Trial Court Judge in Manila (Pedro Jr.); a practicing
Physician/Internist in Baltimore specializing in infectious disease (Rolendo); a Registered Nurse in Canada
(Thelma); a Dietician and a banker in Canada (Lydia) and an Accountant in Canada (Elmer/ deceased). "My
parents were absolutely the wind beneath our wings. Not only did they sacrifice for us; they challenged us to
aim high. And thus, they were so proud and overwhelmed with joy when they were chosen in 1979 Parents of
the Year in the entire province of Ilocos Norte." #
