Professor Reynaldo V. Pascua Chicago, Illinois Scholar and Civic Leader Par Excellence An Educator Among Educators
|
It has been said that education is one's best asset. No one can
steal it from you and the more you make use of it, the more you
profit. In a relatively poor country like the Phlippines, education is
an investment worthy of a lifetime of sacrifice. Traditionally, it is
the best "pamana" Filipino parents can give their children.
Reynaldo V. Pascua undoubtedly took this value to heart when
he decided to invest his future career in education. This was also
impetus behind his decision to move to the U.S. together with his
wife Glenda some thirty years ago. Their determination and hard
work to find the realization of their dreams in a land of "endless
opportunities" have paid off in more ways than one could
imagine. Rey has made an indelible mark as an educator and a
respected leader in the Filipino-American community in his
adoptive land. In his native Candon, Illocos Norte, he is beloved
as one of ts accomplished sons and ardent supporters. In
recognition of his career achievements and invaluable socio-civic
and community service, Rey was recently selected to be among
the Twenty Outstanding Filipino-Americans n the U.S. and
Canada for the year 2001. A look back at Rey's achievements
over the last three decades wll tell us why.

Rey Pascua obtained his master's degree at DePaul University in Chicago and his bachelor's degree at the
Polytechnic University of t he Philippines graduating with high honors. Similarly, he finished high school at
Ilocos Central Colleges and Candon National High School with the highest academic awards.
Rey's teaching career began in 1961 at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila. Shortly after
settling in Illinois, he began teaching at Cosmopolitan Prep School in Chicago and later moved to Bryant and
Stratton College where he taught until 1974. He then went on to teach at Oakton Community College in Des
Plaines and at the Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette. Currently, he is Associate Professor and
Dean of Faculty Liaison at Northwestern Business College north campus with whom he has been affiliated
since 1989.
As an eucator, Rey has served as the first Asian past president of an all-American professional Chicago Area
Business Educators Association in the State of Illinois covering nine countries wherein he was the recipient
of the 1997 Excellence in Education and Service Award. An active Catholic, he was first regional Asian
president of Greater Midwest Catholic Business Education Association and National vice president of
National Catholic Business Education of the United States. He has been a past president of various civic,
humanitarian, and cultural organizations, among them the Chicago Bayanihan Lions Club, Candonians of the
Midwest, Filipino-American Professionals, Northshore Filipino Association, and was one of the 100
centennial awardees (1898-1989) and a recipient of the Golden Award for Merit in the field of Education in
Candon, Ilocos Sur where he was also Commencement Speaker of the Class of 1997. Rey was also
selected to be a Reviewer of the Introduction to Business-Our Business and Economc World textbook
published by Glencoe/McGraw, Hill. He served as Chairman of the Business Education Department, North
Central Accreditation and Evaluation of St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights and St Edward's High
School in Elgin, Illinois. He has organized numerous service-oriented and professional/educational
workshops concerning business and technology including Lions leadership workshops, and participated in
workshops in Ethnicity, Racism and Cultural Diversity in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Illinois.
Hardly one to rest on his laurels, Professor Pascua continues to teach accounting, bookkeeping and
busness courses part-time at Regina Dominican High School while helping students at Northwestern
Business College develop their business skills. He said, "I can be a mentor for the younger generation. I like
to share my expertise, be a resource."
His commitment to his career is matched only by his fervour for community service which extends well beyond
the academic confines. For many years, Pascua served as 1-A District Governor for Lions Club International,
helping over 100 Cook County clubs coordinate programs for the blind and disabled. Pascua holds the
distinction of being the first Filipino-American elected as District Governor of Lions Club International District
1-A, and as a lifelong position, Pascua continues to advise the organization. "I like to help people, and I like to
meet lots of people. We help a lot of people who are not getting government funding, who are desperate.
Just to hear people say, "thank you" means a lot. I had the opportunity to touch the lives of a lot of people."
Early this year, Professor Pascua was selected for inclusion in the prestigious Marquis' Who's Who in the
World, International Who's Who of and Who's Who in America. These honors are limited to those
individuals who have truly demonstrated outstanding achievement in their own fields of endeavor and who
have thereby contributed significantly and positively to society. He was also among the recipients of the
Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century award (Cambridge, England) and the first Fiipino-American to
receive Chicago's Hall of Fame for Education and Community Service Award. Through the years, he has
received literally hundreds of plaques and certificates of appreciation for his unstinting contributions to both
the academic and Filipino-American communities.
Amidst all these honors, Rey is deeply grateful for all the blessings he and hs family have received. He
continues to serve actively as Mass coordinator and lector in his Parish of St. Margaret Mary in Chicago and at
St. Nicholas Church in Evanston.
On the family front, Rey lives with his lovely wife Glenda, a registered nurse, in Evanston, Illinois. They have
two daughters, Marissa and Marites, who is married to Mark Dean and by whom the Pascuas have three
"apos": Laura, Matthew, and Grant. Oldest daughter Marivic is deceased.
Professor Pascua has made it from Candon, Ilocos Sur to Evanston, IlInois by consistently rising to the
challenges along his path. He has made a huge difference in the process, and has given us every reason to
say "I am proud to be a Filipino". #
