AIDA RAMISCAL MARTIN, Ed. D.

Aida Ramiscal was barely 19 , the youngest of the bunch to
finish her BSE degree at the Marcos State University; that same
year she started teaching as she garnered Top Ten for the
Teachers Competitive Examination .
In 1967, Ilocos Norte nominated her for the International Farm
Youth Exchange, (IFYE) Program sponsored by the National 4H
Club Advisory Council of the Philippines for travel to foster
international friendship and understanding. Of the 60
nominees from 60 provinces in the Philippines, 10 were picked
out as finalists on the spotlight at the University of the
Philippines. Luckily, she tied with the first place, national winner
with Eugene Galaraga, Jr based on these criteria: essay and
project, performance during theNational 4HClub Rally, and
interview.
In 1970, she earned her first MA degree at the Northwestern University and became the
District Guidance Coordinator for 22 public elementary schools, in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte. She
also received two summer scholarship grants for graduate school at St. Louis University,
Baguio City.
In 1973, Aida migrated to Hawaii, on a Fly Now Pay Later Plan with the Philippine Air Lines,
(PAL) and started as a sales clerk on her 3rd day in Waikilki. for 2 shifts- 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
and 5:00 -11:00 pm in another store.
By 1977, she earned her 2nd Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Hawaii while
working half a day at Kapalama School.. Then she was hired by the Hawaii Bilingual/Bicultural
Education Project as a field demonstrator (Resource Specialist) and developed, field tested,
with a team, numerous cultural readers, math and social studies guides for use as
supplementary resources in the Hawaii Public Schools.
While working for her Doctor of Education, Ed. D. Degree at the University of Hawaii, she was
teaching in the elementary school during the day and was teaching part time at Farrington
Community School Adult Basic Education, (ABE) at night from 6:30 – 9:00 at night twice a
week. She was named 1987 “ Teacher of the Year “ in Adult Education in Hawaii for
excellence in and dedication to teaching in preparing adults to become more “employable,
productive, and responsible citizens.”
On August 12,1990, the Dean of Graduate School of the University of Hawaii remarked,
“Welcome to the community of scholars ; the doctor’s degree is the highest degree in the
land.” Dr, Aida. Ramiscal Martin, was among them after 8 years of toil. Her doctoral
dissertation was on “Teaching Writing as a Tool for Learning with Adult ESL Students: A Case
Study,” included in the Dissertation Abstracts International, vol. 51, no. 10, April 1991.
She continued teaching at Fern School, Honolulu, DOE in various capacities: homeroom
teacher, technology Coordinator, and currently an English for Language Learners, (ELL
Coordinator).
Dr. Martin has been involved in manifold organizations: a Board of Director for the Hawaii
State Teachers, Association, (HSTA) policy making body of over 13,000 public school teachers
1994- 96; a member of the Hawaii State Advisory Council of Adult & Community Education,
appointment approved by Board of Education, 1994-2000; Board of Director, Bacarra High
School Alumni Association of Hawaii, 1992-2003; Adviser, Philippine American Cultural
Association of the Pacific, (PACAP) 2003 – present; member of Our Lady of Peace Cathedral
Choir 1992-present;, GUMIL Hawaii- Group of Ilokano Writers, Filipino American Historical
Society of Hawaii, FAHSOH) , Hawaii Council of bilingual Educators, and the University of
Hawaii, Foundation President’s Club.
Moreover, she has been a consistent chapter/state delegate of the HSTA from 1997-to 2007
and attended the National Education Association (NEA) convention in – various cities-
Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Orlando, Washington DC, and
Philadelphia.
Recognitions and awards she received included: “Who is Who in American Education” 1989;
Outstanding College Students of America, 198 9. She was a Progress Awardee in Education,
by the United Filipino Council of Hawaii (UFCH) umbrella organization of over 200 Filipino clubs
for her outstanding and significant contributions in the field of education that made an impact
in the improvement to the quality of education in Hawaii.
For her deep appreciation and affection and penchant for the academic world she sponsors
a scholarship for a deserving student at the University of Hawaii majoring in BA Filipino, a
program coordinated by Dr. Ruth Mabanglo and Dr. Teresita V. Ramos. Another Dr. Aida
Ramiscal Martin Scholarship goes to United Bacarreneos of Hawaii with Mrs. Florence
Ranchez, at its helm.
Her late husband, Bruce Edward Martin, a Caucasian US Army communications specialist of
the Vietnam War, a National Defense Service Medalist, made 43 parachute jumps, and a
computer wizard played a major role in making her become the woman she wanted to be.
Germane to her goal, Dr. Martin wants to promote international friendship and
understanding in the new millennium.
