Dr. Yap strongly believes in continued medical education for the doctors and nurses in his

The devotion Dr. Yap has for medical care has gone beyond the hospital setting and into his church
life. He is committed to ensuring that not only is his hospital staff well-educated, but also that the
members of his parish are well-informed about health topics and medically safe while at church.
Since 1998, he has been a very active parish council member at the Church of the Resurrection in
Ellicott City, Maryland. Since 1999, he has coordinated the church’s annual health care information
fairs. During these fairs, healthcare providers from various specialties are present to answer
questions from interested parishioners. About 450 people come every year, visiting display booths
that house brochures on a range of health issues such as prostate, colon and breast cancer
screenings, and booths where bone densitometry, blood pressure screening, and other simple tests
are offered free of charge. Dr. Yap also set up adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and
Automated External Defibrillation (AED) classes in coordination with the American Red Cross to train
church staff and parishioners. Once trained, the volunteers become part of the church’s medical alert
team that Dr. Yap established in 1999. “I do what I do because I think it’s very important for everyone to
have a basic understanding of medical issues,” Dr. Yap says.

His involvement with the community at large is significant and varied. He is frequently invited as a
speaker or guest lecturer, not only at medical functions, but also in elementary schools and high
schools. He recently was a guest speaker at a seminar at Centennial High School in Ellicott City on
Getting Ready for College. His topic was about Immunizations and Sexually Transmitted Diseases in
the Adolescent. Since 2006, Dr. Yap has been Treasurer, International Medical Graduates Section of
