DR. SAN JOSE, “SJ” as he is fondly called by his peers and
associates, is a Fellow of the Philippine Society of Military
Surgeons. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Philippine
Society of Neurological Surgeons.
SJ is a leading neurosurgeon of the Cordillera Region,
comprising the City of Baguio where he is permanently based
to date, the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Bontoc, Mt.
Province, Kalinga and Ifugao; and Region I covering the
provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos
Norte; and the cities of Dagupan, San Carlos and Alaminos in
Pangasinan, the city of San Fernando in La Union, the cities of
Candon and the Heritage City of Vigan in Ilocos Sur and the
city of Laoag, the capital of Ilocos Norte, northern areas of the
Philippines.
This youthful medical practitioner who serves from the heart, undoubtedly a civic-service oriented
Doctor as shown from his ocean of complimentary but selfless service to the Filipino communities,
was born July 2, 1958. He is the third of four (4) siblings of Major Leonardo M. San Jose (Deceased)
and Corazon M. Roxas (Deceased).
In the year 2000, SJ founded the “Shunt For Life Foundation, Inc.” in San Diego, California, USA
together with Mrs. Mel Madrid. This foundation was established to extend free surgical assistance to
the less fortunate children afflicted with Hydrocephalus and Meningoceal.
This humanitarian Foundation has grown throughout the years with members from other US States,
namely New York, California, New Hampshire and Nevada, including the Philippines. Every year,
“Shunt For Life” members devote at least two weeks of their lives to give justice to the Foundation’s
goals and objectives, primarily to save the lives of concerned children in the Philippines.
Since its inception, the Foundation has successfully served some 100 cases of Ventriculo-Peritonial
Shunting (Bypass procedure) and repair of Meningoceal for free in Baguio City, Ilocos Sur and nearby
provinces under SJ’s coverage areas.
To date, DR. SAN JOSE is affiliated with the Pines Doctors Hospital, Sto. Nino Hospital, Baguio
Medical Center and the Philippine Military Academy Station Hospital, all in Baguio City; Benguet
General Hospital in La Trinidad, Benguet; St. Martin Hospital, St. James Hospital and Metro Vigan
Hospital in Candon City, Ilocos Sur and Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, respectively; and Gov. Roque Ablan
Memorial Hospital in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
DR SAN JOSE is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Baguio South (RCBS), the third of the eight
(8) service clubs so far organized in the City of Baguio and in the capital town of La Trinidad, Benguet.
He is currently the President of the Medical Professors of Pines City Colleges, a member of the Board
of Directors of the YMCA of the City of Baguio, Inc. and presently the Association’s Auditor, a past
Director of the same Association in 2004.
He is also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines and a member of the Al
Bahr Shriners, California, U.S.A.
He is an active member of the Philippine Medical Association and the Baguio-Benguet Medical
Society (BBMS).
With his affiliation to various civic and service groups, SJ has received the following awards:
- Club Award (RCBS) 1999.
- Special Award given by the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) for saving the life of cadet 4C
Von Rich Topher Vargas in August 1999.
- Most Outstanding Rotarian Award 2002.
- Presidential Merit Award (Rotary) 2002.
- Presidential Citation on Community Service (Rotary) 2003.
- Certificate of Recognition as Director of YMCA 2004.
- Centennial Project Award (Rotary International) 2005.
- Leadership Award (RCBS) 2005.
- Plaque of Recognition (YMCA) 2006.
- Presidential Merit Award (Shunt For Life Mission) 2006
- Distinguished Service Award (YMCA) 2006.
DR. SAN JOSE completed his primary and secondary education in Aquinas School, San Juan, Metro
Manila. He finished his BS Medical Technology at the University of Sto. Tomas and Post Graduate with
the Degree of Doctor of Medicine at the Fatima College of Medicine.
He had his Specialty Training at the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center with the
SPECIALTY of Neurosurgery (and with the rank of CAPTAIN).
As a military Doctor of Medicine, SJ was assigned in the AFP Training Command in Tanay, Rizal and
at the Philippine Military Academy in Fort Del Pilar, Baguio City.
