RENATO GOROSPE, MD
Senior-Medical Officer, Ministry Of Health, Nassau, Bahamas
Born with the twin traits of devotion and perseverance, Rene
distinctly possesses a peculiar inclination to work and achieve
excellence in whatever is before him.  Rene's caring nature
was eminent at an early age, Being the eldest son among
nine children, ”kuya Rene"  asssumed the duty of being the
right hand of his parents. Rene did not aspire to pursue
medicine but his parents' strong desire to have a medical
doctor in the family led him to his life's work.

“I spent so many late hours studying, there was a point in my
life that I wanted to quit medical school and be as carefree as
my other siblings but I didn't have the heart to disappoint my
parents.
Rene is the second oldest child of Jose Gorospe and Floria Marquez. They are originally from
Ilocos Norte but moved to Baliwag, Bulacan, where the nine children practically grew up. The
Gorospes' came from humble beginning, they had a meat stall at the local open market in
Sampaloc, Manila. Like most

Filipino Families, his parents did not mind working hard to provide their children with a good
education. Rene's parent wanted to have a doctor in the family and they saw the realization of
that dream in the person of their eldest son.

While at F.E. U. Medical School,
Rene met Linda Rodriguez, a
freshman student at the University
of the Philippines. She was a
constant companion and study
partner encouraging him to
complete his studies. They married
as soon as Rene graduated from
Medical School.

They got married in 1966; they
were just starting their life together
when Rene became seriously ill. He
was rushed to the hospital with a
respiratory problem, which the
doctor suspected to be
tuberculosis, but the X-ray results
came negative. He was confined for
6 months for further observation
and series of tests.

Together with faith and a strong
belief in the healing power of the
Lord, they persevered through this
trying moment. The traumatic
experienced of coming face to face
with his own mortality humbled
Rene. This encounter with death
gave him the passion to care deeply
for life, his fellow man and medicine.

When he fully recovered, Rene put
his renewed passion into action,
determined to do live life to the full,
he started a family and worked
tirelessly in the profession that
helped to heal his body. Rene's
work experiences
carried him from Marian Hospital in Manila to Georgetown Hospital in South America. He also practiced in a small
remote part of Guyana, called Bartica. Here he tended to the people who worked in the jungles, mining gold and
diamond. Despite the rugged terrains, and the primitive culture, he would often risk his life and go deep into the
Amazon Forests to care for the local natives called “Amerindians".

From here he was led to the Bahamas. He continued to practice medicine and serve the Bahamian people in the
Emergency Room at Princess Margaret Hospital. Here he spent almost 20 years of his career, eventually becoming
the Head of Department. He retired from working full time in 2002.

In 1996 Rene opened his own practice at Prince Charles Drive; he continued his service to the people and
dedicates his life to serving the sick, rich and poor alike. He finds profound joy in serving the poor, neglect and
the needy. If patients can not afford to pay, he treats them just the same and gives his services for free. It is the
remembrance of the rich and timely grace of God at the beginning of his career that has served as the motivation
to continue in his services to the people through medicine but it is also that grace and love that propels him to
this day to partner with others to care and to give to the less fortunate.

After opening his clinic, the clinic became a large supporter of St. Martin Convent in Nassau, Bahamas. Here a
charitable organization called " Friends of St. Martin" in  honor of St. martin de Porres, was formed and continue
to operate. “Friends of St. Martin" caters to the senior citizens in the neighborhood.  Food, clothing, medications,
medical care is provided to those in need.

Both Rene and Linda came from close knit families. They missed their families back home and the comfort of
Filipino living. Hospitality is one of their endearing qualities. They are always excited to meet "kababayan"
whether they were just visiting the Bahamas or they came to reside or to work..

It is deeply instilled in them the "samahan" and the "bayanihan" attitude of a true Pilipino. Inspired by their
welcoming ways, the Filipino community in the

Bahamas soon became just one big family... Kuya Rene has a passion for singing, he always encourages others
to display their talents, and this would make for many wonderful times together especially on week-ends, for fun
afternoons with marina” and “karaoke” sessions

Rene is one of the founders of the Filipino Association in the Bahamas. Together with his wife, they provide and
show Filipino Culture in the forms of native dances, music and decadent Filipino Cuisine to the Bahamas. They
became active in the International Cultural Organization in the Bahamas. It is in sharing of the Filipino Culture
with the Bahamians and to   the people of other nations living in the Bahamas, which has brought Dr. Gorospe
much joy and satisfaction.       '

Rene and Linda are blessed with 3 children, they are all married; Mari Peach Gorospe Looney is a nurse and is
living in L.A, Manuel Orange, a child psychologist by profession working with autistic children, and Rene Lemon, is
a professional golfer living in the Bahamas, he is the golf pro at the newly opened Albany Golf Course in the
Bahamas.

Rene did not dream of becoming a doctor but his devotion and perseverance brought him success.  He is distinctly
recognized by the Community for his selfless service.
