CHRISTOPHER M. GUERRERO Hall of Famer Medicine/Medical Missionary “My addiction is traveling as well
as my therapy. I traveled to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Philippines, Romania and Ukraine, all in the name of
medical mission.”— Christopher M. Guerrero, M.D. Christopher M. Guerrero, M.D., who obtained his medical
degree from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in 1976, has been
serving as a preceptor and lecturer, Longitudinal Primary Care Program at the University of Illinois College of
Medicine Chicago since 1996‘. He is also a member and founder of Global Medical Foundation, also in
Illinois. He was born out of ten children, a son as a seventh child in the brood of the proud parents of Mr. &
Mrs. Ignacio Guerrero family, in the heart of the province of Nueva Vizcaya (known for its perante—one-of-a-
kind citrus fruit and for the famous salt spring of Salinas. On that day and place, a future Filipino here was
born in the name of Christopher Guerrero, grown to be a well-recognized medical doctor. Not just a medical
doctor out to make money but a medical doctor with a passion to help other poor people in other foreign
countries. His passion to help also took him to his native Philippines so many times taking care of the most
deserved ailing kababayans in need of his specialty in general medicine.
When asked why he is so involved with medical missions, he replied, “It was at one point in my life when I
went home, feeling unhappy, discontented, and very empty. I felt like I needed to do something worthwhile for
my time and effort and to have that innermost satisfaction of peace and contentment in my life.” This is what
he calls his “awakening moment in my life.” He then took charge of his resources, diverted his skills, and
selected his options to continue sailing at the forefront of preventive medicine. He started forming his
alliances and groups of medical physicians also with the same common passion to help the
underprivileged sick. His influences and connections led to the creation of a global missionary team,
focusing more on the Philippines and particularly in the province where he was born.
Dr. Guerrero’s dedication and unselfish devotion to his global medical mission is simply unequalled. He is
currently affiliated with St. Mary’s & Elizabeth’s Medical Center. His various medical fellowships include:
American Academy of Family Physicians; American College of Forensic Examiners; American College of
Forensic Medicine; American College of International Physicians; and American College of Quality
Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. He also serves as a faculty mentor for the nursing students at
St. Mary’s University, School of Health Sciences, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines.. In addition to
lecturing at the university on a wide range of topics, he has created a scholarship fund to help two to three
economically deprived students to be able to attend the university for free each year. He also provides the
opportunity for the senior nursing students to accompany the nurses and doctors in his medical mission
assembly.
Also, in addition to the medical services that he provides on a yearly basis to the people of Nueva Vizcaya,
Dr. Guerrero has adopted a rural elementary school where the pupils are native Ifugaos and Igorots called
Cabuan Elementary School—where it cannot be reached by motor vehicles because the roads are very
narrow and rocky. He sends school supplies and boxes of books to support their education, procuring the
first encyclopedia for their library. He has also helped to build a city park for the children in Bayombong, the
capital city of Nueva Vizcaya. You don’t need to be a medical professional to join Dr. Guerrero’s humanitarian
treks to the poor countries of the world or to your own particular provinces in the Philippines.
If you have a passion and want to have a peace of mind in helping the sick and the less fortunate like Dr.
Guerrero, you may join his medical mission. With all these exemplary accomplishment, Dr. Christopher
Guerrero does not think of stopping there as he sees himself to be extending helping hands to those who
need it wherever and whenever he is.
