another from the administration, yesterday threatened to stage a
marathon filibuster today, the supposed last day in the Commission on

It is also one way of going around the ban on the CA member’s

Another P1-P2 increase per liter set this weekend
6/3/2008  8:00 PM ET

OIL firms yesterday warned oil prices could go up as often as twice a
week at P1 or P2 per liter to allow them to recover their costs amid rising
world oil prices.   “That’s the only way for us to recover [our costs]. If we
increase by P1 to P1.50 per liter on a weekly basis, it would take us a
long-time to recover,” an oil company official said.

Filipina Artist Wins Again
Filipina Artist Wins Again       6/4/2008  9:00 AM ET

Thirty-year-old U.S. Based Filipina artist wins again in an international art
competition. Sherie Sta. Cruz-Sloane, a Filipino artist residing in Illinois
bested hundreds of entries in the recent Strathmore ATC & ACEO
International Exhibition and Art Competition held in Reno, Nevada.
ATCs and ACEOs stand for Artist Trading Cards and Art Cards Editions
and Originals. These are individual art miniatures with 2.5 by 3.5 inch
size. Some sources have credited M. Vänçi Stirnemann, who began
trading sessions in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1997, as popularizing these
miniature arts in the modern era, although modern ATCs and ACEOs can
be traced back to portrait miniatures and to a kind of business card
popular with Impressionistic era artists.

Katas ng VAT?   6/6/2008  6:30 PM ET

Why all this rush to launch ad hoc projects purportedly intended to help
the poor cope with the current economic crisis? There is the P500
one-time cash grant to poor power users. There is the P1 billion outlay for
scholarships for needy but less than bright college students. There is the
P1 billion to finance the outfitting of jeepney engines with LPG conversion
kits. The costs of these will total P4 billion, to be taken from a portion of
the proceeds from VAT collections.

Dispute over subsidies widens   6/15/2008  6:00 PM ET

Questions over the legality—and soundness—of Malacañang’s resort to
various subsidies, such as the one-time, P500 power subsidy to lifeline
users or those consuming less than 100 kilowatt-hours a month, have
intensified, as some lawmakers pressed their alternative option: Instead
of using unsustainable, questionable doles, just temporarily lift the value-
added tax (VAT) for petroleum, which has given the  government an
embarrassingly huge windfall since oil prices started soaring.
