PR-026-09,22 January 2009 – Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland Maria Theresa P.
Lazaro, accompanied by First Secretary and Consul Margarita S. Ibayan, met with Philippine
Honorary Consul General Mr. Daniel Andreas Vogel and Consul Margareth Schaeppi, a.h.
during her visit in Basel on 16 January 2009. Ambassador Lazaro commended Consul
General Vogel and Consul Schaeppi for their continued support in strengthening relations
between the Philippines and Switzerland and providing consular services and assistance to
the Filipino and Swiss community in Basel.

During the visit, Consul General Vogel and Ambassador Lazaro discussed the preparations
for the Philippines’s participation as Guest Country in MUBA 2009 which will be held on 13-22
February 2009 at the Exhibitions Center in Basel.

MUBA is the largest public trade fair event held annually in Basel, Switzerland which features
numerous individual exhibitions of national consumer goods including home furnishings,
health and sports products. The Department of Tourism headed by Secretary Joseph H.
Durano spearheaded the event in coordination with the Phil-Swiss Business Council,
European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Philippine Honorary Consulate General
in Basel, and the Embassy of the Philippines in Berne. END

PR-025-09, 22 January 2009 – During her visit to Basel on 16 January 2009, Philippine
Ambassador to Switzerland Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, accompanied by First Secretary and
Consul Margarita S. Ibayan, met with the MUBA 2009 official organizers from MCH Messe
Schweiz headed by Mr. Dieter Hug, Head of Businessunit Development, with Mr. Christoph
Lanz, Head of Group Management Services and Legal Department and Ms. Bettina Gysin,
Guest Country Project Manager. The group exchange views on the dynamic structure and
technology systems that are developed and constructed for various international exhibitions
held at the Exhibitions Center in Basel.

The Philippines, as Guest Country for MUBA 2009, will have the opportunity to showcase its
world-class goods and services and hopefully capture Switzerland’s highly sophisticated
consumer market. MUBA 2009 will be held on 13-22 February 2009 at the Exhibitions Center
in Basel. The Department of Tourism headed by Secretary Joseph H. Durano spearheaded
the event in coordination with the Phil-Swiss Business Council, European Chamber of

New Philippine Ambassador to Laos presents Letters of Credence

PR-028-09, 22 January 2009 – H.E. Marilyn J. Alarilla, the new Philippine Ambassador to the
Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), presented her credentials on 14 January to
President of Lao PDR, H.E. Choummaly Sayasone, who formally accredited her as the new
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to the Lao
People’s Republic.

During the official discussions, both Ambassador Alarilla and President Choummaly
expressed the significance of being members of the ASEAN community of nations and
reassured each other to maintain the long time excellent relations between RP and Lao PDR
and to further promote the two countries’ economic ties and cooperation in various political,
socio-economic and development projects.

Swiss President welcomes the New Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland,
H.E. Maria Theresa P. Lazaro




















PR-027-09, 22 January 2009 – Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz welcomed H.E. Maria
Theresa P. Lazaro as the new Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland during the latter’s
Presentation of Credentials at the Federal Palace in Berne on 13 January.

At the outset, the Swiss President expressed hope that Ambassador Lazaro has settled
well in Berne, and conveyed his warm wishes to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Ambassador Lazaro responded by congratulating President Merz on his assumption to the
Presidency of the Swiss Confederation beginning 1 January 2009. She also conveyed to him
President Arroyo’s New Year’s greetings and felicitations.

President Merz and Ambassador Lazaro then reviewed their two countries’ relation,
including the successful state visit to the Philippines of former Swiss President Pascal
Couchepin last year. On economic and tourism matters, Ambassador Lazaro stressed the
importance to the Philippines of the upcoming MUBA event in Basel on 13-22 February 2009
where the Philippines will be the Featured Guest Country. MUBA, or Mustermesse Basel
(Mustermesse literally means “sample fair”, or an exhibit of sample products), is Switzerland’
s biggest and longest-running annual consumer event.

On his part, President Merz expressed his high regard for Filipinos who, he said, are known
for their industry and diligence not only in Switzerland, but also in other parts of the world.
Ambassador Lazaro and President Merz agreed on the importance of strengthening the
bilateral relation between the Philippines and Switzerland. END

Asuque makes the traditional courtesy call
on H.E. Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri
at the Speaker’s office in Ain El Tanih in
Beirut. Ambassador Asuque conveys the
best wishes of the government and people
of the Philippines and expresses the hope
for the success of the efforts of Speaker
Berri and the Lebanese government
toward national reconciliation to achieve
lasting peace and renewed prosperity. The
Ambassador also assures Speaker Berri of
the strengthened efforts of the Embassy to
enhance bilateral ties especially on trade
and culture while continuing to address the
concerns and welfare of Filipino workers.
Speaker Berri invites the President of the
Philippine Senate and the Speaker of the
House of Representatives with their
respective congressional delegation to visit
Lebanon this year to reinforce the
cooperation and interaction among
Lebanese and Philippine parliamentarians.
Ambassador Asuque says he will convey
Speaker Berri’s invitation to the Philippine
