DFA welcomes EU’s Additional Humanitarian Assistance for Mindanao
|
| |
9 July 2009 - Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo welcomed the European Commission’s additional grant of €3 million (approximately P200 million) in humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the conflict in Mindanao.
“This additional aid will further boost the Philippine Government’s humanitarian programs in Mindanao. It is also a reaffirmation of the EU’s confidence in the Arroyo administration’s continuing efforts to achieve lasting peace in Mindanao,” Secretary Romulo stated.
The Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission approved last week the additional grant. This humanitarian assistance is in addition to the €6.5 million given in October and December 2008, and the €3 million in rehabilitation assistance provided in October 2008.
The assistance, to be implemented over a nine-month period, will cover food and nutrition, water and sanitation and primary health care. As before, the funding will be coursed through international organizations in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the National Disaster Coordinating Council.
The European Commission has been providing development and humanitarian assistance to Mindanao for many years now. It is supportive of the Philippine Government’s efforts to promote peace and security in Mindanao. END
