Book on Bataan Death March and its Aftermath Launched at Library of Congress

10 July 2009 - Authors Michael Norman and Elizabeth Norman gave a dramatic reading of excerpts from their
book “Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and its Aftermath” at the Madison Building
of the Library of Congress recently.

Tears in the Darkness was praised by the Associated Press’ Richard Pyle as “an extremely detailed and
thoroughly chilling treatment that, given the passage of time and thinning of ranks, could serve as popular
history’s final say on the subject.”

During the talk, Michael and Elizabeth Norman disclosed 10 years of work went into the writing of the book,
including interviews with survivors of the Bataan Death March from the Philippines and the United States as
well as soldiers from Japan.

The book talk, launching and signing is a partnership of the Embassy of the Philippines, the Library of
Congress Asian Division Friends Society, the Veterans History Project and the Library of Congress
Professional Association (LCPA) Veteran’s Forum as one of the activities held during the month-long
commemoration of the 111th Anniversary of Philippine Independence in June. END

DFA to hold Special Mass for the Recovery of Former President Corazon C. Aquino

10 July 2009 - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) joined the rest of the Filipino people in offering prayers
for good health and recovery of former President Corazon C. Aquino.

Led by Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo, the DFA held a special Mass at the DFA Auditorium Friday
afternoon. The mass was concelebrated by Monsignor Rufino Siscon and Father Mario Cueto.

“With her deep faith and inner strength, and the outpouring of prayers and good wishes from everyone, we
pray that President Aquino will be able to regain good health soonest,” Secretary Romulo said after the Mass.
DFA officers and staff, including members of the Diplomatic Corps and the media, attended the religious
services.

President Aquino is the leading figure in the restoration of democracy in the country in the 1980s and a much-
admired Chief Executive.

The men and women of the DFA owe President Aquino for her contributions to improving the Philippine
Foreign Service. It was under the term of President Aquino when the Foreign Service Act of 1991 (R.A. 7157),
which further strengthened the foreign service, was enacted.

For his part, Secretary Romulo has the highest regard for President Aquino, having served as an original
member of the Aquino Cabinet, in his capacity as Secretary of Budget and Management, and concurrently
Chairman of the Development Budget Coordinating Committee, and Member of the Bangko Sentral’s
Monetary Board. END
