Gov’t grants P860 K socio-economic aid to former NPA Reds

Bengued, Abra, July 15 – The government today granted livelihood support worth P 860,000 or P 20,000 each to 45 former New People’s Army (NPA) combatants who embraced the fold of the law prior to the effectivity of the Social Integration Program (SIP).
The provision of assistance is part of the government’s closure process of its old rebel returnee program in Abra province.
Assistant Secretary for Finance and Administrative Services Ma. Consuelo Cascolan, who represented Secretary Avelino Razon, Jr. of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), and Abra Governor Eustaquio Bersamin led the simple turnover ceremony held at the Provincial Capitol in this district.
Other officials in attendance included Abra Vice Gov. Victorino Baroña, Jr.; Dir. Susan Marcaida of the OPAPP Program Implementation and Monitoring Office; Lt. Col. Ignacio B. Madriaga, 41st Infantry Battalion (IB) commanding officer; Chief Supt. Orlando Pestaño, Philippine National Police (PNP) regional director; Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) officer Decima Cabang,; and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Provincial Dir. Cresencio Calina.
At present, the government, through the OPAPP, has been preparing to hand over livelihood support amounting to P 15-M to 761 former NPA rebels in Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Cagayan Valley, Isabela, Batangas City, Apayao and Leyte.
The turnover is slated in July and August.
