Pista sa Paris 2009
|
| |
The Filipino Community in Paris, in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy, capped this year’s celebration of the 111th anniversary of Philippine Independence with the annual Pista sa Paris held at the open air Stade dela Muette in the 16th arrondissement of Paris on July 5.
This year’s event was participated in by some 35 Filipino community organizations, with approximately 3,000 Filipinos and friends attending the day-long festivities.
To kick-start the event, a festive parade commenced from Place Trocadero facing the iconic Eiffel Tower, which is itself celebrating its 120th anniversary this year. Embassy officers and staff led the 45-minute walk from Trocadero to Stade dela Muette.
The colorful costumes, the revelry of street dancing, and the cheerful smiles of our kababayan enticed spectators and onlookers. Adding glitter to the parade were the candidates of the “Mutya ng Kalayaan 2009.”
This year’s Pista carried the theme of this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebration which is: “Kagitingan, Kagalingan at Kasipagan Tungo sa Tunay na Kalayaan.”
The official program began with the singing of the Philippine and French national anthems. The Independence Day message of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was read by First Secretary and Consul Maria Josefina Ceballos. Deputy Permanent Representative to UNESCO and Consul Igor Bailen read the Independence Day message of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo.
In her welcome remarks, Ambassador Rora Navarro Tolentino mentioned that the theme of this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebration captures the admirable qualities that distinguish the global Filipino community. She expressed hope that the Pista sa Paris will continue to be an event for a charitable cause.
Ambassador Tolentino articulated that on April 22, the Filipino community in Paris turned over P450,000.00 to Education Secretary Jesli Lapus for the Department of Education’s Adopt-a-School Programme. The funds represented proceeds from previous Pistas and will help construct a two-classroom school building in Zamboanga del Norte, Mindanao.
Some thirty five booths filled the Stade dela Muette showcasing Philippine cuisine, arts and crafts. The Philippine Embassy booth provided information on consular services and tourism destinations. Overseas absentee voter registration was also held at the Embassy booth.
The Pista sa Paris combined the pageantry, the color, the taste and aroma and the merriment that every Filipino fiesta brings. END
