Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona Conducts Consular Outreach Mission in Palma de Mallorca
|
| |
A team from the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona conducted a weekend consular outreach mission to Palma de Mallorca, a port city in the Spanish island of Mallorca, from 25 to 26 June 2009.
Mallorca, a famous summer tourist destination in Spain, hosts around 1,500 Filipinos, most of whom are employed in the local tourism industry.
During the mission, the team provided a whole range of services to some 200 Filipino community members, including passport services, notarization of documents, processing of Reports of Birth, and solemnization of Oaths of Allegiance for former Filipino citizens reacquiring their Philippine citizenship under RA 9225, and registration of overseas absentee voters.
Consul General Eduardo de Vega held a series of meeting with local Filipino community leaders. Among the issues discussed was the plan for Palma de Mallorca to be the host of this year’s Ambassador’s Cup basketball tournament, an annual tourney pitting Filipino teams from various cities in Spain in a one-day series of games to determine the best Filipino team in Spain.
The Consul General also attended as guest of honor the community’s summer league basketball tournament, and participated in a three-point shootout.
With the consular team were Barcelona-based representatives of BPI and Metrobank.
The team also met with a Philippine-born Spanish biologist, whose family owns Amorsolo paintings. Speaking to the Consulate team, he confirmed that the family would be willing and interested to show and sell these paintings to Filipino art collectors.
The team was ably assisted in its mission by Mr. Juan Torrente Blanch, Philippine Honorary Consul in Mallorca, who joined the Consul General in his meetings with Filipino community leaders.
Speaking to Filipino and local reporters regarding the mission, Consul General de Vega (who shouldered his own expenses for the trip so as to save on government expenses) explained that this mission demonstrated the Government’s continuing commitment to serving the needs of overseas Filipinos. “If they cannot come to us for much-needed services, then we will bring the services to them,” he said.
