Young versus old, fresh versus experience -- predictions of who would win were uncertain at first, although some of the older press men chose Sonsona being the younger man would win over the older Lopez.
At the beginning after being introduced, Sonsona faced a corner of the square ring and prayed covering his face with his gloves. Perhaps God would give strength and help decide the winner?
This last scheduled fight lasted the full 12 rounds despite an early knockdown by Sonsona of Lopez on the fourth round and a few vengeful hits by Lopez below the belt of Sonsona who moved away.
Both fighters looked tired but continued on until Sonsona won his 14th ring fight by unanimous decision by the judges watching at ring side.
The boxing bout was telecast live via TSN satellite cable and had close-ups .
A lot of Filipinos waved little Philippine flags handed out by the Philippine Consulate Office headed by Consul General Alejandro B. Mosquera who helped in promoting the fight throughout the Sonsona team visit, with press meetings in the Philippine Canadian community.
Showing our support for the young fighter, we waved the flags when Sonsona knocked down Lopez on the fourth, and when he was able to deliver punches for points.
Psychologically, this may be an indication that community support can help energize a fighter and win the battle since Sonsona smiled after the rounds and when he was announced the winner, he was waving 2 little flags of the Philippines and Canada!
He obviously felt the support of his fans and raised his arms at each corner of the square ring.
The whole Sonsona team went on the ring and hugged each other. To achieve world level status in boxing is something the Philippines can be proud of with Sonsona following in the international fame gained by Pacquiao for Welter Weight since they both came from General Santos City, Cotabato.
A few days before during the press briefing at the Filipino Center Toronto at 597 Parliament Street, Sonsona had expressed an interest in living in Toronto Canada.
There are over 100,000 Filipinos who have made that decision to live in the biggest city in Canada so maybe his wish will come true and he too will become a dual citizen. We certainly can welcome such a young winner within our social circles for the added status and attention he can bring!*********
