RP Consulate General in Chicago conducts Outreach in Dublin, Ohio

The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago conducted consular outreach services in the State of Ohio last
August 29 in coordination with the Philippine American Society of Central Ohio (PASCO).

The outreach was held at the La Herba Buena Filipino Store in Dublin, Ohio. It was the first consular outreach to
be held in Dublin.

Filipino Community Meeting

PASCO invited several key officials at the meeting and dinner for the consular team on August 28. The dinner
was attended by Justice Evelyn Lundberg-Stratton of the Supreme Court of Ohio and husband Jack Lundberg;
Judge Judith French of the 10th District Court of Appeals; and Mr. Dewey Stokes, former Franklin County
Commissioner and past President of Fraternal Order of Police, with his wife Florence.

Consul General Blesila C. Cabrera briefed the Filipino community on the recent developments in the
Philippines. She encouraged also qualified Filipinos to register as overseas absentee voters and participate in
the national election in May 2010 and talked about dual citizenship.

The local officials expressed their appreciation to the consulate officials and to the Filipino-American community
for their various contributions to the State of Ohio. They said the Filipinos are “wonderful, hospitable people.”

The “Consulate on Wheels” to Dublin was led by Consul General Cabrera and composed of Ms. Maria Janora
M. Bernardo, Mr. Berth D. Salvador, Ms. Edita del Mundo-Nano, Ms. Maria Rosenia L. Centeno, Ms. Rowena M.
Ricafort, and Mr. Eduardo A. Salazar.

Consular Services

Some 300 people availed themselves of the consulate’s consular outreach services. In addition, a total of 81
applicants registered as overseas absentee voters.

The consular team also attended to numerous queries mostly on dual citizenship, ownership of property,
permanent residence and study in the Philippines, visas, tourism, and overseas absentee voting. Promotional
materials, posters and brochures were made available by the Philippine Department of Tourism Office in
Chicago.

The consular outreach to Ohio is part of the consulate’s vigorous campaign to have a large turnout of overseas
absentee voters.

The Filipino community expressed appreciation to the consulate for coming to Ohio and requested that the
consular services be done once a year.

The consular outreach program is a regular activity of the consulate to bring its various services closer to its
constituents residing in areas within its jurisdiction. END

New York Fil-Ams Remember Ninoy’s 26th Death Anniversary, Memorial Includes
tribute to President Cory

The Philippine Consulate General in New York reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Filipino-
American community gathered at the Benigno Aquino Triangle in Queens, New York last August 23 for a wreath-
laying and flag-raising ceremonies led by Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI), the Benigno Aquino
Triangle Foundation, and the Philippine Consulate General. A reception for the guests was then held at the
nearby Philippine American Center offices of FAHSI.

To honor Ninoy Aquino and the late President Corazon Aquino, young Fil-Am members of FAHSI rendered
special performances which include an original song composition entitled “Yellow Bells” for President Aquino
that was played and sang by Fil-Am Dylan Schroth, and Bayan Ko by Edmerald Gan and later joined in by the
audience. A poem by Ms Bonnibel Fonbuena entitled “Passion” was also dedicated to President Aquino.
“Pilipinas kong Mahal” was played in the accordion by Mrs. Adelina S. Vivas, a senior citizen. There was also a
running silent video on EDSA I and the funeral of President Aquino.

Guests came in yellow while Cory-pins and yellow ribbons were distributed. The program was printed on yellow
paper.

Dr. Connie Quiambao, Chair of the Benigno Aquino Triangle Foundation, extolled the virtues and legacy of
President Aquino in the transition of the Philippines from dictatorship to democracy. Dr. Quiambao, a good
friend of the late President, attended the necrological services and funeral rites in Manila.

Deputy Consul General Melita Sta.Maria-Thomeczek noted the heroism of Ninoy Aquino and the EDSA I
experience as very important milestones in the history of the country. Guests also reflected on the lives of Ninoy
and Cory.

A prayer to close the program was led by Rev. Eduardo Trubanos, D.D. The memorial was a well-attended event
with many of the guests wearing yellow color. Over-all coordinator for the program was FAHSI member and Fil-
Am youth Bonnibel Fonbuena. END
