FLORIDABLANCA, Pampanga – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fast track infrastructure projects here that will help local residents in two villages she visited recover form the damage wrought by typhoons Labuyo and Maring.
The Chief Executive visited barangay Bodega where there is an ongoing P51 million project for the rehabilitation of damaged revetment along Caulaman River. She was briefed by Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, Jr. and DPWH 2nd District Engineer Hernando Manansala.
Monsoon rains brought about by typhoon Maring caused the swelling of the Caulaman river. The DPWH said that intense flow from the upper reaches of Porac mountain ranges cascaded and hit the already weakened existing revetment. This led to the eventual collapse of about 250 linear meters in barangay Bodega.
DPWH officials explained to President Arroyo that restoration of the damaged revetment serves as protection of residential and agricultural areas of Floridablanca from flooding. It will likewise prevent inundation of the road section along the Angeles-Porac-Dinalupihan Road and as protection to the existing Caulaman Bridge.
Elizabeth Ocampo, a resident of barangay Bodega said that due to the recent flooding, residents lost their livelihood while piggery businesses were affected particularly by the strong water coming from the river.
Ocampo and other residents were thankful that the projects were completed in less than a month through the initiative of the President.
The President then inspected barangay Dampe which also suffered from flooding as their dikes were damaged by typhoon Labuyo.
The DPWH has an ongoing project estimated to cost P9 million that will restore the damage dikes with permanent slope protection and channeling of water along the Caulaman river.
The strong flow of water the Caulaman river directly hit the dikes that led to the eventual scouring of about 900 linear meters at barangay Dampe.
The President is hoping that these projects will help local residents recover from their economic and social losses.
Presidential Adviser for Central Luzon Lorelie Fajardo, who was with the President in her Floridablanca visit, said the objective of the President’s visit in Floridablanca is to make sure that the projects and programs of the government are put in place.
She explained that as the country’s leader, it is the agenda of the President to make sure that her projects are implemented throughout the country.
