Paeng Nepomuceno to Join Diplomats’ Bowling Tourney in Turkey

Six-time world bowling champion Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno will play in the Diplomats’ Bowling Tournament and participate in exhibition games, according to the Philippine Embassy in Ankara.
The event will be held on December 5-6 at the Play Planet bowling center locate at Ankara’s modern Panora Shopping Mall.
Mr. Nepomuceno will compete in the bowling tournament with diplomats in Ankara on December 5, and with Turkish and Filipino bowling aficionados in Istanbul the following day. He will also conduct bowling clinics as part of the event.
Mr. Nepomuceno is a Guinness Book of World Record holder for three categories – for being the youngest winner of the Bowling World Cup at 19 years old; for winning the title four times in different decades; and for the most number of career world titles at 118. He is also recognized as the greatest international player in bowling history.
He was hailed by the International Bowling Federation as the “International Bowler of the Millennium” and who is also an inductee in the American Bowling Hall of Fame, has been designated as Ambassador of Goodwill by the United Nations.
A large number of diplomats and other bowling enthusiasts are expected to register and participate in the two bowling tournaments, and have started practicing their games to prepare for the competition. At stake in the competition are special trophies as well as other valuable prizes.
“The special bowling tournaments in Ankara and in Istanbul are part of the year-long activities marking the 60th Anniversary of Philippines-Turkey Diplomatic Relations this year,” Philippine Ambassador to Turkey Pedro Chan said.
“We also aim to raise funds to be donated to the victims of the recent series of typhoons and floods that devastated the Philippines where over 1,000 lives were lost and two million people have been dislocated from their homes and continue to suffer from illnesses and related problems brought about by those destructive natural calamities,” he added.
Mr. Nepomuceno said he looks forward to participating in the bowling tournament in Ankara and in Istanbul, “more so for being able to help the Embassy’s drive to raise funds for the typhoon and flood victims in the Philippines.”
“Almost everybody has been directly or indirectly affected by the typhoons. I thank the Philippine Embassy for organizing this bowling event and allowing me to make a direct contribution,” he added.
The bowling tournament sponsors include Etihad Airlines, Rixos Gran Ankara Hotel, the seven-star Cirahan Palace Kempinski hotel in Istanbul, ESEN Moving Company, IZEKTAS handtools owned and managed by Philippine Honorary Consul Ender Yorganzilar in Izmir City, Istanbul-based Filipino-Turkish painter and art teacher Rowena Ulayan-Tuscioglu, Turkish businessman and Philippine Honorary Consul General Sukyu Diyab in Mersin City, Play Planet Bowling Center in Ankara, and many other individuals and business companies in Ankara and Istanbul.
Istanbul Filipino community coordinators Mr. Nilo Nicdao and Ms. Mirano are helping the Embassy in ensuring a successful bowling tournament in Istanbul. END

Malaysian NGOs continue to Donate for Philippine Typhoon Victims

The cheque was handed in a turnover ceremony last December 1 held at the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. The amount represents their donation for the victims of typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines.

Established in 2008, the Bank Negara Malaysia Volunteers has over 300 members led by its President and Founding Member, Central Bank of Malaysia Deputy Governor Malaysia Dato’ Mohd Razif bin Abd Kadir. Central Bank Governor Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz is the Patron of the Association.
Ambassador Lecaros previously received the cheque worth Malaysian Ringgit 2,000 (approximately P26,000) representing the donation of the Rotary Club of Metro Kuantan for the typhoon victims on November 7.
The Embassy has forwarded the two cheques to the Department of Foreign Affairs, for transmittal to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC). END

RP Trains Trainers in Rice Production in Brunei Darussalam

In line with the Philippine Government’s assistance to Brunei Darussalam in enhancing its rice sufficiency program, the “Training of Trainors Course on Rice Production” was officially started last November 30, Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Alexander B. Yano reported.
The course, a collaboration project between the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA- PhilRice) and Department of Agriculture and Agrifood (DAA)-MIPR, is an outcome of the Implementing Arrangement on Cooperation in Rice Research and Development signed by the two countries on November 10 and Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation signed on April 27.
Ambassador Yano was invited as guest for the official opening of the course held at the Setia Pahlawan Hall, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR). The guest of honor was MIPR Deputy Permanent Secretary, Pengiran Hajah Mariana binti Pengiran Dipa Negara Laila DiRaja Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin.
She conveyed her hope that the participants will take advantage of the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills from the renowned team of experts from the PhilRice-DA.
“On behalf of the MIPR, I wish to convey once again our gratitude and appreciation to the Philippine Government for providing the necessary assistance that will ensure the success of the training program,” she said in her opening remarks.
The course is part of a capacity-building program on rice production for Brunei researchers, extension workers, and farmers aimed at contributing to Brunei’s self-sufficiency programs. It also includes cooperation in the establishments of rice R& D facilities and programs.
Mr. Ruben B. Miranda, PhilRice’s Deputy Executive Director for Development, leads the five-man team of trainers in Brunei Darussalam.
There are 35 participants from the four districts in Brunei Darussalam, which include officers from the DAA and staff of Wasan Vocational School (WVS). The training is being conducted at WVS, which began last November 26 and will end on December 23. END
