Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. Remembers Jose Rizal

Ambassador Willy C. Gaa led the officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy and its attached agencies in
commemorating the 113th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Jose Rizal with flag raising rites at the Embassy.

In remarks that followed, Ambassador Gaa recalled the Philippine national hero’s outstanding personal
qualities and life achievements and observed that Rizal remains relevant today as an individual worth emulating
and whose principles deserve constant rediscovery and learning.  Taking heed from the words of Rizal himself,
“To foretell the destiny of a nation, it is necessary to open the book that tells of her past,” Ambassador Gaa
ended his remarks with an exhortation to draw lessons from Rizal’s life in order to understand the story of a
nation all Filipinos are helping write.

Light breakfast for the officers and staff concluded the morning’s celebration.
