Greek Court Orders MV Aetea Sierra to Pay Salaries to Filipino Crew
|
| |
Filipino seafarers scored a significant victory in labor protection when a Greek court directed the owner of MV Aetea Sierra to pay higher salaries to its crew, the Philippine Embassy in Athens reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Under a court order issued on 21 December 2009, the award to be given to the crew, including 12 Filipinos, was calculated using Greek wage standard which is about four times more than what the seafarers would have received on wages stipulated in their contracts.
The award would cover the period from 9 July to 9 November, while the residual claims shall follow to cover the period starting 10 November 2009 until the date of the seafarers’ actual departure from Greece to the Philippines.
The Filipino crew of MV Aetea Sierra sought the assistance of the Embassy after negotiations with the Greek vessel owner for their unpaid salaries and damages failed.
The seafarers also filed a case against the vessel owner. A Filipino ship engineer is represented by a Greek lawyer offered by the Embassy while lawyers of the International Transport Federation (ITF) are assisting the rest of the Filipino crew.
The Philippine Embassy is already making arrangements for the Filipino seafarers’ repatriation. Eleven of them have completed their contracts and have signified their wish to go home.
Should the ship owner fail to pay the crew, the vessel will be auctioned off, proceeds of which be used to pay for the crew’s wages. END

RP Embassy in Vientiane Celebrates Rizal Day
|
| |
The officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Vientiane and their respective families attended the flag- raising ceremony to honor the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, last 30 December 2009 at the Embassy grounds.
During the ceremony, attendees sang the national anthem with fervor and recited the pledge of allegiance in Filipino.
Philippine Ambassador to Laos Marilyn J. Alarilla delivered a message on the timeless lessons on the life and writings of the national hero.
Hailing the multifaceted genius of Rizal, Ambassador Alarilla extolled the vision of the Filipino national hero and the power of his ideas, widely known through his letters, poems, novels and essays.
An early proponent of non-violent reform and a forerunner of freedom movements in Asia, Rizal advocated education and the forging of national identity as the path of true freedom.
More than a century later, Rizal’s insights resonate more than ever particularly on the importance of an educated and enlightened citizenry to enable the election of responsible leaders that will move the Filipino nation forward to its rightful place in the region and the world.
Ambassador Alarilla reminded all present that the overseas absentee voting from 10 April to 10 May 2010 will provide this opportunity to contribute to a stronger and even more progressive Philippines.
She encouraged everyone to invite Filipinos in Laos to vote during the forthcoming national elections and thus, contribute to living up the ideals of Dr. Jose Rizal.
A sumptuous Filipino breakfast followed, consisting of the traditional sinangag (fried rice), omelette, fried dried fish, longganisa (Filipino sausage), pork barbecue, lasagna, oranges and grapes, which were contributed by Embassy personnel. END
