DFA Welcomes Pardon Announced by Saudi King
|
| |
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) today welcomed the pardon issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.
To mark the return of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi King issued royal pardons last December 11, 2009 to some prisoners who do not pose any danger to public security.
The royal pardons would cover those who are detained or sentenced to jail for petty crimes and violations, and who have made restitutions to their victims.
The names of those who have been pardoned have not yet been released and may be known only after a few weeks.
The DFA have made representations on numerous occassions for the pardon of Filipinos in Saudi jails, and will redouble its efforts in the light of the announcement of the pardon.
The Philippine Government, through the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate General in Jeddah, continues to extend its help to other Filipinos who are in Saudi jails for grave offenses.
For instance, in the case of Mr. Dondon Lanusa, the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh hired a private defense lawyer to ensure that due process is observed and that Mr. Lanusa is given his day in court.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo also wrote a letter to Prince Mohammad bin Fahd seeking to spare the life of Lanusa. The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh is also in constant communication with the victim’s family to convince them to grant forgiveness and settle the private aspect of the case.
Mr. Lanusa was arrested for the death of Mohammad Al-Qahtani on August 10, 2000. The Dammam Grand Court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by beheading last June 10, 2002. However, the implementation of the sentence is suspended until the minor son of the victim, who is now 10 years old, reaches the age of majority. END

RP Ambassador to Russia Commends Filipino Pastry Chef
|
| |
Philippine Ambassador to Moscow Victor G. Garcia III congratulated Chef Troman Felizmenio, a Filipino pastry chef who created a replica of St. Basil’s Cathedral at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Moscow.
The replica is featured as a centerpiece in the hotel lobby and has been drawing raves from onlookers including US-based cable news network CNN, who ran a story on the replica in its website.
Ambassador Garcia commended Chef Felizmenio and told him that Filipinos living in Russia are proud of his accomplishments as pastry chef of the prestigious hotel.
According to the CNN article, creation of the two-meter high edible cathedral began in early September and lasted nearly three months. Each day, Chef Felizmenio spent two to three hours baking and sculpting the pieces together.
His creation has the same proportions, and is an exact exterior replica, of the 16th century cathedral. A big tower stands in the center while eight smaller, onion-domed towers surround it, all richly decorated with royal icing.
St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, with its colorful onion domes, is considered an architectural icon.
Ivan the Terrible, the tsar of Muscovy, commissioned the cathedral’s construction to commemorate his 1552 military conquest of the city of Kazan, east of Moscow, which was the stronghold of the Tatars, a Turkic ethnic group.
There is a chapel under each dome symbolizing one of Ivan’s assaults on Kazan. A ninth tower was constructed in the 1580s to house the tomb of St. Basil the Blessed.
The chef and his team of bakers were making a limited number of smaller cathedrals to sell whose prices start at 50,000 rubles (US$1,600).
Chef Felizmenio is a native of Bicol and has been working at Ritz Carlton for two years. He is married to a Russian and they have a six-month old boy.
